My mother read science fiction. Mostly in the magazines: the "Big Three", _Astounding_, _Galaxy_, and _F&SF._ There wasn't a whole lot of SF in book form in the 1940s and 1950s. (I do have a couple of early 50s books, e.g., _Hero's Walk_ in a Ballantine hardback.) So I was reading adult SF from an early age. -- Dorothy J. Heydt Vallejo, California djheydt at gmail dot com

I'm pretty sure my original copy of one People book was given me on a family trip, found at a gas station, no doubt because I'd whined a lot for it, or to shut me up more generally, or some such. Some of her short stories were definitely published as for children by the time I was around to notice. At least, <The Anything Box> looked like a kids' book to me, and was so shelved by my local library. Um, I think. > But no, that was the actual title of the book, protagonist could > kiss her elbow which was a sign of her Powers, and there was a > large evilish cat living there too. <No Flying in the House> by Betty Brock, illustrated by Wallace Tripp. 1970, apparently, so I'm surprised I never ran into it at the appropriate age. But anyway there's a copy in the library I'm posting from. So thank you. (Amusingly to me, there's a Korean translation. Also Japanese.) A Betty Murphy Brock did a thesis, <A Study of the Novels of Reynolds Price>, in 1968. On the other hand, a Betty Kephart Brock did one titled <The Earlier Remediation of At Risk Students>, which is actually about the use of standardised tests for that purpose, in 1983. However, on the gripping hand, it appears from this site: <http://biography.jrank.org/pages/398/Brock-Betty-Carter-1923-2003.html> that our author is neither of these writers. Her other books: 1971 - <The Shades>, illustrated by Victoria de Larrea. Speculative fiction for kids (the titular magical eyewear enable seeing ghosts). Apparently not translated. All sources named in this post attest this as hers. It's much harder for me to reach, so I guess I'll decide after reading <No Flying in the House>. 2000 - <Reuben Brock, Jr. (1784-1848) and Descendants> by Clarence C. and Betty C. Brock. Not only does the cited site give her middle initial as C (for her maiden name, Carter, rather than for a middle name given her at birth), *and* mention her interest in genealogy, but the biography in <Something about the Author> volume 4, to which that site refers, says her husband was Clarence C. Brock. A very safe bet. Note that this is her husband's (and daughters') genealogy, probably not her own. The only library claiming a copy in Worldcat is the Library of Congress, but I don't think I'd read it even if it were close by. The SATA article describes her as primarily interested in fantasy, and working on a fantasy at a date when <The Shades> had already appeared. She strikes me as a much more effectively erased writer than the ones James Nicoll has been writing about, though I admit I'm not current on that thread of his. The article online also cites her obituary in <The Washington Post>, for 27 December 2003, which is more detailed in general than either SATA or the website named, but doesn't mention the 2000 book. Joe Bernstein PS I was tempted to list <...and He walks with me>, illustrated by Marianne Adams, published by "BB Ministries" of Camden, NC. However, its author was an alumna of Old Dominion University, which Betty Carter Brock did not attend (and graduated when BCB was forty, at that). <http://ww2.odu.edu/ao/alumni_magazine/fall03/recentbooks.html> The Worldcat record dates it to 1981, but this 2003 magazine calls it "recent", so I dunno. -- Joe Bernstein <Kdeurama@gmail.com>

Google 'Leather Book Weight', and you'll find a wide variety of LBWs, which are designed to hold down the pages. Probably won't help with paperbacks. I frequently use my tablet either in a while eating or seated at bar (alone, I'm not an asshole), and there, I find I need something to prop it up at a convenient angle - a salt shaker or a small shot glass does the trick. pt

I also have opposable thumbs, and like food too much to be prone to
spilling it. But the plan was to use the plane one is eating off of
to hold the book open, and that seems, to me, to be a plan fraught
with peril for both book and food.

I don't read (on the book reader) too much at home, and I pretty
much *never* go anywhere without my (prescription) sunglasses. The
case for the sunglasses makes an excellent tripod to lean the book
reader against. But on rare occasionas, I've used other impromptu
objets, too.

One side of the case folds into a stand. Mine is something like https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Protective-Cover-Kindle-Voyage/dp/B00I14F19M though they were much cheaper back when I got mine! Chris

They caught enough hell over it that they vowed it would never
happen again, and it hasn't.
But it's a good reason to keep backups, which is, as noted,
trivial.
