Once again, Stephen Fry's "Making History" is recommended.

Based on the Wikipedia summary, it seems terribly overwrought until
I got to ". . . except that his favourite band never existed . .
." Now I'm almost tempted to read it.

I found it amusing, though my copy went walkies somewhere in Texas so I've never done a reread. I don't think Fry does "Overwrought".

Well, one might regard "The Stars' Tennis Balls" (aka "The Revenge" in its US printing) as overwrought, but then it's based on Dumas.

I have no opinion on the book itself. The Wikipedia summary made it
seem so. It's Wikipedia, so it sucks automatically. Also, I'm very
picky on what I read, so I'm always looking for reasons to skip
something. I currently have a backlog waiting, which is a little
unusual for me.

Apparently, Dumas wasn't paid by the word, he was paid by the
column inch, which produces all the short half-sentence dialog.
Nobody does Dumas pastiche better than Brust, though.

Well, so are Brust's Paarfi books.

Fry doesn't imitate that particular aspect of Dumas. I'm not sure what to call the book. Pastiche seems wrong, homage, perhaps.

Well, no Holocaust is already a win.

But it certainly _is_ true that one can't go back in time, just shoot someone,
and prevent the *Great Depression* from happening.

Why would you believe that no Hitler means no Holocaust? Jews have
been a favorite target of tyrants for millennia, when they need a
scapegoat.

Or, as I said, the oppressive conditions imposed on Germany at the

NoHitler would probably keep the communists, an actual threat to freedom,
as the preferred opponent of the alt-NSDAP. An alt-post WWI Germany that
doesn't persecute Jews anywhere near as much as the OTL version did would
have been a tougher opponent in alt-WWII. Besides not being able to
use Jewish talent, and encouraging those few Jews who could get out
early enough to help the Allied cause, persecuting the Jews wasted
resources, such as rolling stock and fuel for trains needed to transport
prisoners to the death camps.

Even if someone else replaced Hitler in the anti-semite politician niche,
it is a bit much to assume he would adopt an exterminationist policy.
Segregation, oppression and even pogroms would be plausible.

Could we shoot Smoot and Hawley? :) Maybe just get the Senate
to seat Reed Smoot. Some other blockhead would sponsor that tariff
bill, I suppose.

That's the way to prevent the 3rd Reich. Engineer a non-vindictive
peace. (How the hell do you make that happen?!)

This would be a soc.history.what-if discussion,and probably
has been.

Actually, somebody more sane would not have started WWII at all.

Compare the situation before WWI. Five relevant power blocs: Germany,
Austria-Hungary, Britain, France and Russia.

Post-Versailles: Austria-Hungary was dissolved, the new Soviet Union
was out of the diplomatic game. Germany, Britain and France were left.
The US was back to isolationism (for then).

Britain and France had just proven they could only hold back Germany
with help from the US. So, given a bit of time, the ascendancy
of Germany was assured. In effect, Versailles had handed Germany
the victory of WWI, cleverly disguised with huge reparations and
loss of territory. It was more than foolish to risk this in a war.

Somebody sane in charge of German foreign policy would have seen this,
and acted accordingly. Stresemann certainly did.

Make sure that ammonia synthesis doesn't get ready in time for WWI?
Germany runs out of ammunition in 1915.

Some time, read up on the strange, sad life of Fritz Haber, whose efforts
fed billions, killed millions (including much of his extended family),
and maimed many thousands.

Ah. Have Fritz Haber grow up in England or the United States. But will that
result in those countries getting ammonia synthesis first, or just prevent it?
After all, Germany was a leading nation in science and engineering in those
days.

My position on "the trolley" problem is that
the proposed action makes me a murderer,
but something that would happen if I were or
were not present isn't my fault. So I don't
kill Not-Been-Evil-Yet Hitler.

If I really wanted to change history, I'd kidnap baby Hitler and
bring him up somewhere else and not let him get gassed in WWI.

If I did that then social services might decide,
quite reasonably, that I wasn't a fit person.
(Although I cycle regularly.)

They also might ask questions about the haircut and
the moustache, i.e. why does he look like Hitler.

Who would? Who would ever have heard of Hitler?

Okay, just to be on the safe side (are there other time travelers
about?) as he grows up, give him a different haircut and tell him
Errol Flynn he's not, and the mustache looks silly.

My time travel adventure (if I'm going) - my time
travel rules.

Having said that, I /was/ thinking that my point -
my joke - was better made without mentioning Charlie
Chaplin.

(Or Freddie Mercury.)

Maybe it comes back, like Harry Potter's scruffy hair
and myopia.
