See my other post ... if we bestow planethood on the four largest
asteroids in the Belt, Jupiter really would be Planet Nine.

Well, um, no; unless you want to give planetary status to Ceres,
Pallas, Juno, and Vesta, Jupiter is Planet Five.

It should radiate well above background in the IR if it's a solar system object.  If it's a much older captured object, its remaining internal heat could be much less.

Jupiter radiates at about 150K, but it gets vastly more solar energy and has more internal heat. So this thing would radiate, at a guess, well below 100K.  I don't have a good idea as to how difficult it is to detect an e.g. 75K source of that size.

far out of there.

Definitely not. New Scientist is a British scientific journal, and their URL is

https://www.newscientist.com/

On the other hand, phys.org is a "web-based science and technology news source", 
from its About section.

New Scientist (which I greatly enjoy) is *not* a 'scientific journal'. 
Its a weekly news magazine of science. Think Scientific American 
crossed with Newsweek. It's a lot of fun, but is quite willing to 
sometimes publish highly speculative material.

I reccomend it.

  I saw the same article and wondered if that supported the idea that it isn't native to our system- that it was captured during a close pass by another system recently (in geologic terms).

  As Terry said, it's very far out and very dark. It wouldn't even be suspected to exist if it weren't for some recently-noticed smaller distant rocks orbiting the Sun rather strangely.
