It should radiate well above background in the IR if it's a solar system object. If it's a much older captured object, its remaining internal heat could be much less. Jupiter radiates at about 150K, but it gets vastly more solar energy and has more internal heat. So this thing would radiate, at a guess, well below 100K. I don't have a good idea as to how difficult it is to detect an e.g. 75K source of that size. William Hyde

New Scientist (which I greatly enjoy) is *not* a 'scientific journal'. Its a weekly news magazine of science. Think Scientific American crossed with Newsweek. It's a lot of fun, but is quite willing to sometimes publish highly speculative material. I reccomend it. pt

It wouldn't even be suspected to exist if it weren't for some recently-noticed smaller distant rocks orbiting the Sun rather strangely. Mark L. Fergerson
