...I get free shipping on my Amazon orders anyway, just by making them
large enough. Amazon Prime Canada is a terrible deal.

I actually have Amazon Prime, through no fault of my own: I order
enough things from them (cat food, e.g., and books when I can
afford them), and somehow they decided to reward me with Prime.

But I don't have an e-book reader.

Unless you count Calibre, And I have no idea how I would load an
e-book onto my PC so that Calibre could read it.

I can't remember what OS Hal has you on. There are free Kindle apps for
Windows and iOS, but Linux is a problem.

On Linux, you could read your Kindle books in a browser:
https://www.amazon.com/cloudreader

I know you're not interested in getting a tablet, which is the easiest way.

My PC is running Windows 7. I also have a Raspberry Pi running
Raspbian (a modified Debian Linux), but I don't know whether it
would read e-books.

I'm not going to get anything on Kindle. They have demonstrated
their policy that anything they put out belongs to them and can
be taken away at any time.

I strongly doubt that I could read anything on a tablet anyway;
my eyes aren't getting any younger.

The free Kindle app (reader and library) runs fine on
Windows 7; that’s what I have. The reader is perfectly
usable, but I don’t much care for it, so if I’m reading at
the computer[*] I use Calibre. This requires loading the
books into Calibre, which is very easy once Calibre is
properly set up; you would need Hal’s help installing
Apprentice Alf’s DRM-breaking tools, but if I can do it, I
have no doubt that he can.

[*] I usually read in bed on a Kindle tablet. In winter,
when the bike is on the trainer, I often use an old Nook
reader, since I don’t really care what happens to it;
Calibre handles the format conversion for me.

No, it can’t -- if you’ve added it to your Calibre library.
Amazon has no access to that copy.

Neither are mine. The size is adjustable.

I am virtually certain that you will ignore these facts,
but facts they are.

Only if you synch the Kindle. There's no good reason to do that.

They are actually easier to read than a real book.

They did that once, and because it *didn't* belong to them. A sub-vendor
turned out to be distributing it illegitimately. That it was "1984" was
a hilarious coincidence.

And they won't do it again. After the resulting court case, "Amazon's
attorneys agreed to legally binding terms that describe its content
deletion policy. When it comes to blog and periodical content, as well
as software, Amazon retains the right to perform a remote delete. But
when it comes to books, deletions will only occur under a limited number
of circumstances: failed credit card transactions, judicial orders,
malware, or the permission of the user."

Also, you can train Calibre to slurp all the content of your Windows7
Kindle application and convert it to plain, unprotected ebooks that
can't ever be affected by Amazon even if that changes.

There's a bit of setup - you have to install Apprenteice Alf's plug-
in in Calibre, to strip out the encryption. Then, you install the
free Kindle app on the PC, which will download the books. Then import
those books from the Kindle library folder into Calibre. Nothing
overly complicated.

This is only needed if you want to strip DRM, either due to your views on
your property rights in the books you've bought, or to read them without a
Kindle app.

However, if you have a windows box, you can just run Kindle on that. If you
can run a browser, you can use the cloud reader.

I read most my Kindle books on an iPad, with the Kindle app for iOS.

Dorothy ought to try one of the eInk based Kindles in a store. They are
wonderfully light (main problem with using a tablet), and the batteries
last for weeks before recharge.

Since Dorothy asked about reading them _in Calibre_ - no, really,
it's still quoted right up there ^, it would, in fact, be
necessary.

We've had that discussion many, many times, and only a fucking
moron would believe there's any chance in hell of that _ever_
happening.

Yes, but.

(a) I don't trust Amazon not to recall anything electronic at any
time it suits them; I buy real books and CDs and DVDs from them,
which then become my property.

(b) and more to the point, I am virtually house-bound. I go out
of the house, most weeks, only on Sunday to go to church and do a
bit of shopping in Berkeley. What do I want with a portable
e-book reader?

If you've stripped off the DRM and aren't using their software, it
doesn't matter. They can't touch it, ever. That's not the reason
you are unwilling to consider an ebook reader.

Terry, dear, I don't know *how* to strip off DRM.

That's why you use the plug-in for Calibre. It's simpler to
install than Calibre itself is, and once installed, it's
completely automatic.

It would just be "download it, in any of several formats, from the website" -
but you've said your computer is set up to regard such things with deep
