That's a subtle enough difference I'm not sure it would be a problem,
any more than the common mispronunciations of Missouri, Oregon, and
Nevada are.
"Mary Land" for Maryland, on the other hand, or "Ar Kansas" for
Arkansas, makes you sound like an idiot.
"Massatusetts" used to drive me nuts when I was younger; never
understood where that one came from. At least I always knew what the
speaker meant.

I've lived in AB for ten years, after growing up in the adjacent province. "D" for "T" is a generic trend for any mid-word T, but I've never really noticed this for Alberta. I've just said it a few times, and the consonant is so mild and brief that it's really hard to tell the difference. -- We are geeks. Resistance is voltage over current.

See <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flapping> for a reasonable lay account. > but I don't think it annoys Albertans when someone > betrays their out-of-provinceness by pronouncing it as > it is spelled. That’s partly because flapping is extremely common in North America varieties of English, to that extent that a majority of non-Albertans will have it in <Alberta>. I've heard what seems like Wiscaaaansin, with the multiple As
sounding like the vowel in "scan," but drawn out.
I never noticed Wi-sconsin much in M'waukee, but suspect it might
be an outstate or upstate thing. I heard `Sconsin a lot: saying the
"wi" so quickly yo missed it, if it was said at all. There are
folks who use "Sconnie" as slang for a Badger Stater.
I've watched football games with ex-QB Joe Theismann doing the
commentary, and the Badger or Packer fans would howl at Joe's
constant references to "Wes-conson."

There is no "th" in Massachusetts.

D'oh! Inserting the extra T and deleting the ch is something else, entire.

No. There's no TH in "Massachusetts." This particular error is a Southern thing. I never heard it from Irish or New Englanders of any sort, but for some reason some Southerners change the CH to T. I remember watching a Democratic convention once -- I forget which year -- where the woman reading the roll call could NOT pronounce "Massachusetts" correctly, despite many attempts. She KNEW it was wrong, but simply could not get the CH sound out, always saying "Massatusetts" instead. She got very apologetic, but never did get it right, and I don't see how it can possibly be that difficult. I'm fairly certain she was from Georgia. -- My webpage is at http://www.watt-evans.com

It wasn't until I found myself in "Floor - uh, duh" that I first heard someone say it "wi-sconsin", and that was a snowbird FROM Wisconsin - One who was in the process of making fun of a Floridian trying to say it - and repeatedly mangling it into something I can't even try to spell phonetically. -- Brought to you by the letter K and the number .357 Security provided by Horace S. & Dan W.

No, the aspiration would always be wrong; I just thought you meant the syllabication, which can go either way. (Do you always aspirate the "c" in "constitution" and related words, for example? I'm pretty sure I don't. With a different vowel, "conventional" I think usually doesn't get aspirated, and not just when preceded by "un".) -- JLB
