Further, that non-tanned color may not fade very much if the tan is long term. I was rather surprised at the paleness of the first Iranian that I met personally. And Alexander Siddig wasn't notably darker than his American and British contemporaries on Deep Space Nine. He did get much darker when he started playing Arabs, however I wonder how much of that is makeup.

The Song of Solomon contains the lines (approximate from memory, and there are a zillion translations anyway), "I am black, but beautiful; do not look askance and me because the sun has burned me." She's saying that she's a country girl, who works in the fields a lot, and she's darker than a nobleman's daughter who stays indoors most of the time. I'd also like to quote L. Sprague de Camp: "It ill behooves the 'white' man to boast of his racial purity; his descent is the most scrambled on this planet. Geneticists have traced at least three genetic strains in Europeans: early hunter/gatherers, later hunters from the Near East, and a third strain from Asia. Occasional miracles do occur, even in Scotland. 25 years ago I did a nine-day cycling tour in the Lowlands starting on 9 September. Having been to Scotland a number of times before, I was very pleasantly surprised to find sunny weather and 80°F (~27°C) in Edinburgh on the 8th. It cooled down after that -- I often started the day in a long-sleeved jersey and tights -- but it was mostly sunny for the whole nine days. I was rather surprised by some of the dialogue in "Swept Away" in which Mariangela Melato is berating a somewhat tanned Giancarlo Giannnini for his blackness. At one point she even uses a word that the subtitles translate as "nigger".
