The art is atrocious for the first year or two, but the writing is
pretty consistent. So if you've started it and it didn't grab you, don't
worry, move on.

I'd suggest Freefall.

Another good one. My husband has started rereading it from the
beginning (possibly to refresh his memory of all the plot
points), when it was in black and white.

I did a full reread after Episode 1 completed just recently. I
discovered that during times I was checking it daily, I'd often now
forgotten what happened. Sections I batch-read, I mostly remembered.

So I'll definitely stick to batch reading. Looks like I don't
consolidate the daily strips into Story unless there's a bunch of them.

I think he started to redraw some of the early ones. I don't know if
he kept that up.

Well, I've read it from start to current, and I think, if you
want to start reading when it gets science-fictional, you should
start with the entrance of Hannelore, whose father owns the space
station and built another character's mechanical hand (which,
note, are not in very common use yet). But the semi-anthropoid
robots, I think, are there from the beginning.

I have QC, XKCD and SMBC on my RSS feed. Explosm is there, but
frequently offends me to the point of almost dumping it. Existential
comics is new on my list, and may get stale in a hurry.

I used to read GG, but the storyline moved too slowly for me.
Melonpool was there for a long time, till it got too tangled in its
time travel threads and went for a hiatus then reset.

Oh, are we doing webcomics again?

I also read QC and xkcd. I'm still into Girl Genius. Plus a bunch more:
Namesake (of which I've completely lost the thread of the plot, and need
to go do an archive binge re-read)
I was disappointed by Aaron Williams' willingness to lie down with puppies,
but his comics PS238 and Use Sword on Monster are still good. (Strange
that they nominated his worst ongoing work -- of course, it all tied in
with trying to woo GamerGate.)
Something Positive
Erfworld
Darths and Droids
Oglaf
Sluggy Freelance
A Girl and Her Fed
Kevin and Kell (although I'm really not sure why)
Earthsong (almost over)
Goblins
Oglaf
Order of the Stick
Quantum Vibe (despite occasional disgust at its heavy-handedness)

He *likes* Oglaf.

So do I; it can be screamingly funny. But be aware that it
is totally NSFW.

It still has some very good weeks, but has sort of lost its way after
the initial long "abused apprentice" arc..

Since we're doing lists:

Schlock Mercenary
Kevin and Kell
Girl Gendius
A Girl and Her Fed
Girls With Slingshots
QC
Alice Grove*
xkcd
Freefall
Something Positive
Breaking Cat News**
Seeking Shelter
9 Chickweed Lane
Luann
Luann Againn (same strip, in a different time period)
Zits
For Better or For Worse
Two Lumps
Scandinavia and the World
Doc Rat
_____
*Which I wish would update more often, but Jeph is only human. I
think.
**Which is currently on hiatus while the artist and her family
move house again.

I read Quantum Vibe all through the first arc. The current one
quickly turned me off; sullen teenagers do not attract me. My
daughter (41 this November) has been binge-watching Buffy the
Vampire Slayer, which with its combination of teenagers and
horror turns me off even faster.

Next?

I no longer read the "establishment" comics. Yesterday, I picked up a
paper over lunch at the fast food place and never bothered to turn to
the comics page.

I still mourn for the 70s and 80s undergrounds; Last Gasp, etal.

That one has now ended, and a new one just begun. It's featuring
Murphy and another fellow whom it seems like we're supposed to
recognize, although I don't.

Hugo? Here is his first appearance as Hugo in QV:
<http://www.quantumvibe.com/strip?page=1086>. He is the download of the
title character of QC: Volume 3.

Thanks. I'd pretty much completely forgotten about that.

Took me a moment to remember, too. But after the first
half-dozen pages I didn't read the second story arc At All, and
it's been a while.
