My little brother and I used to take 'em with a length of fishing line and a two ounce sinker(1). In a nutshell, turkeys are *STOOOOOOOOOPID*. Not just dumb as a box of rocks, but *REALLY*, truly, INCREDIBLY stupid! Put a fencepost across a chessboard from a turkey, and the fencepost will win 19 times out of 20! :) (1) Think bolo, but with just one string/weight instead of three, and not actually released on the throw. -- Brought to you by the letter Q and the number .357 Security provided by Horace S. & Dan W.

Note: while this is entirely true of domesticated turkeys, who are
every bit as stupid as chickens, cows, or hillbillies whose family
tree consists entirely of parallel lines, while turkeys are quite
intelligent, and usually mean as fuck. It's like they know how tasty
they are.

Even smart animals make mistakes, and they didn't exactly evolve to
live in a world with thousands of pounds of steel and plastic
hurtling down the road.

Unlike geese, they don't seem to generally be aggressive (though
there are exception - NPR once did a rather extended piece on an
entire town that was terrorized by a wily old tom and his posse for
months, until a deputy shot his ass). But if you cross one, they
don't aim to scare you off, they aim to hurt you.

Even teh most fanatacial bicuclists are capable of learning. When
the Critical Massholes blocked Slick Willie Brown's motorcade
(which was mayor of San Francisco), and Slick Willie announced
that, for the next Critical Mass event, police would be issued
trunchons, the CM events were suddenly not well attended.

Police being ordered to beat up Caucasian bicyclists with their nightsticks seems unlikely actually to take place. Anyway, I cycle with a helmet. And, if need be, a cup. (And, generally, without obstructing traffic. You have sitting in the road on your butt for that. I think the rights of cyclists are best asserted by cycling copiously, assertively, /and/ considerately of other road users. A parade of course is different. <http://pedalonparliament.org> <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strida> And if you're describing the naked-cycling protest event then the point is taken. (Also, that would be sore on the cobblestones.)

You are apparently not familiar with Slick Willie Brown. There is
*no* doubt in my mind that he meant every word of it, nor is there
any doubt that the police would have followed his orders.
> Anyway, I cycle with a helmet.
I'm sure that will protect your ribs from the truncheon. And the
taser.
Critical Mass, prior to that incident, basically organized a riot
once a month, up to and including overturned cars (for honking at
them). It would have been reasonable to classify them as a
terrorist group. And they were *terrified* of pissing off Slick
Willie again.

Don't forget the bullet proof vest. Seriously.

Obstructing traffic was, literally, the plan for Critical Mass
events. Deliberately blocking as large an area (and the busiest
they could find) for as long as possible.

Critical Mass had that part down.

But the only consideration they'll give drivers is, literall,
violence.

Evolution occues when there is negative survival pressure applied,
and there's few more negative survival pressures than pissing off
Willie Brown.

Not now, But he was at the time. And I expect it's still somewhat
hazardous to piss him off.
(Side not: A lawyer friend of mine met him once. Said after
shaking hands, it was the only time in his life he literally felt
soiled.)

He was Seaker of the House for a number of hears, and ran it with
an iron fist. The state constitution was amended by proposition
specifically to boot him out. It took the collective will of the
entire state to pry him out of office.
