#441532 — _Dune_ quoted in political article

Fromdjheydt@kithrup.com (Dorothy J Heydt)
Date2016-06-09 00:13 +0000
Subject_Dune_ quoted in political article
Message-ID<o8H9y9.4Co@kithrup.com>
Today on Slate:

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2016/06/why_can_t_republicans_distance_themselves_from_donald_trump.html

"Because they're afraid."

The author goes on to say, "Fear is the mind-killer, and Trump
has scrambled Republicans' ability to think clearly about their
dilemma."

Whereupon the top commenter replies,

"Donald Trump is the GOP's gom jabbar. If they keep their hand
in the box, they will continue to feel pain. If they pull their
hand out, they will kill the party."

[or possibly both.]

Cool! But only for the 10% of the population that has read _Dune_ AND remembers the gom jabbar.

Once someone in this very newsgroup made the connection between that
and the dentist's "gum jabber" I've been unable to forget.

Trump as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen seems a natural to me. But Trump as
the Emperor is as good as it gets. [1] Trump's also known as the Emperor
Troll. [2] It's Hillary Harkonnen for leftovers.

AND reads _Slate_ - but I think they know their audience.

Or, there are at least two movies that they may have seen.
Just so they associate it with the word "Sting".

Babylon 5, 'Parliament of Dreams', spoken to an incompetent Narn assassin who
has just been made a target of his own Guild.

B-5 ran WHEN? My kids were still kids then. There comes a time
when you don't need to spoiler that _Alice in Wonderland_ was a
dream or that Lancelot and Guinevere both went into monasteries.

The relevent show ran in 1994, 22 years ago. Since people still
expect spoiler warnings for Citizen Kane (75 years ago), I didn't
think it was totally out of line to ask for an SW.

I'm still ticked at Charles Schulz for having Lucy spoil the
Rosebud McGuffin for Linus in a Sunday Peanuts. I knew of
the movie, but it only ever aired on the Late Late show,
and my bedtime was significantly earlier than that.

1973. I hadn't graduated high school yet. If he had held off
for 18 months, I'd have seen it at one of my college's old
film nights. AAAUUUUGGGGGHHHH! Indeed.

So I'm not the only one who got that spoiled by Peanuts!

...wait, what was that?

Oh, nuns also have monasteries. Okay.

It doesn't spoil _Babylon 5_ until it's
explained, and even then, not so much.
An assassin has been sent with instructions
that "You are to know pain... you are to
know fear... then you are to die", which
is only said when this is already taking
place, so no spoiler there. "Have a
pleasant flight" is spoken by someone else.

I remembered it as a more logical (?)
1. Fear.
2. Pain.
3. Die.

The first to be achieved by explaining about
numbers two and three. But that's maybe why
I'm not a well regarded science fiction
writer or producer, or professional assassin.
Just an occasional amateur - mainly for my
own satisfaction.

In another thread recently, I commented that a naval admiral on leave
spoilered a kid's book for me two thousand years after it had been
written.

Ah, spoilers; my wargame club at the presideo of Monterrey went to see "A bridge too far", which was choppy, so we were asking each other which part of the map the scene took place, so we'd know which units were involved, when the angry guy in the row ahead of us demanded "stop talking! I don't want you to give away the ending!".
