Certainly the total number of episodes is even, and the final pair, "Heaven Sent" and "Hell Bent," are clearly a pair. If next Saturday's episode, "Face the Raven," turns out to be the other half of "SNM", then everything would be tidy. I observe that they have the same director but different writers. -- Dorothy J. Yeah, I was aware of this a while back. It also appears I was wrong about Sleep No More. It wasn't a 2 parter. Which means its ending was VERY weird. I apologise for giving you duff gen, my bad. This week allegedly wasn't a 2 parter either. We had been told (wrongly now, it seems) that this entire season was 2 parters.

"SNM" *is* a nightmare, from which one eventually wakes up. It's an interesting departure from the standard Dr. Who mindset, though -- even without the found-footage business -- and I can only assume Mark Gatiss had enough street cred to get the BBC to show it. Wikipedia says (insert standard grain of salt) that "SNM" was a single and that the last three of the season are a three-parter. I have not yet seen "Face the Raven"; it becomes available on BBC America on *Sunday* evening. Which means that sometime today I'll be able to look up all the UKian reviews of "Raven" and find out what it's about before I see it. Sadly, as a viewer you are led to it by your nose with the writer assuming you're a complete idiot who won't see it coming when it happens so they Chekov's gun it to you 30 mins before the fact. Saying that, IMHO it was a terrible ending leaving at least 2 characters (The Doctor not included) to unknown fates where we'd already been given a ton of exposition about what that potential fate for at least one of them might be. (I'm deliberately being vague here as not to spoiler. You can come back after you've seen the episode and it should be a lot clearer to you, knowing what you know.)

No, actually, they didn't say much as to the actual (as distinguished from hinted) plot. Does she or doesn't she (as the hair-coloring ads used to say)? >Sadly, as a viewer you are led to it by your nose with the writer assuming >you're a complete idiot who won't see it coming when it happens so they >Chekov's gun it to you 30 mins before the fact. > >Saying that, IMHO it was a terrible ending leaving at least 2 characters >(The Doctor not included) to unknown fates where we'd already been given a >ton of exposition about what that potential fate for at least one of them >might be. Well, it's only Act One. If this three-act drama is properly constructed (and Moffat has shown himself to be pretty good at story arcs), the real gun won't go off till Act Three. -- Dorothy J. Now, perhaps Dorothy's cable package doesn't include BBCA, and she watches it on demand. Typically, I see the listing for the new episode some 24 hours after it aired in the UK. I've tried off and on to get onto the Xfinity site today, and until now (4 PM PDT) I got either an error message referencing some IP I never heard of, or a list of episodes not including the latest. I just took another look, and "Face the Raven" is now up. I may get a chance to look at it tonight (we're in a frenzy of packing for a trip to Disneyland during the school holidays -- WITHOUT telling the seven-year-old we're going till tomorrow morning). Which brings to mind the very dramatic and serious JRPG videogame
series "Kingdom Hearts", done by the same company that did the Final
Fantasy series and Chrono Trigger... and set in a universe with the
Disney characters as major players, including "King Mickey".

Apparently the networks are now much less trigger-happy on the cancellation button than they were a few years ago, prefering to first cut back episode orders but keep on giving failing shows a longer chance to catch on. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/19/business/media/with-tv-viewing-changing-networks-take-longer-to-drop-shows.html?ref=television > I'm old enough to remember (just barely) when U.S. TV shows had > thirty-nine episodes per season. David Tennant's era closed with a further four "specials" and there was an additional special for the 50th anniversary of the show's launch, in 2013. But last year, and this, the season order was reduced by an episode to twelve. Two of last year's episodes did however have an extended running time of about an hour (the BBC has no ad breaks). Don't think they're doing that this year. Next season's order is also for 12 episodes and a Christmas special, but various things said seem to imply it will be delivered in two six-episode runs, one in 2016 and one in 2017. The same is also being done at present with Red Dwarf: 12 episodes are being produced back-to-back but six will be delivered as Red Dwarf XI next year with the other six as Red Dwarf XII in 2017. -- "In 900 years of time and space, I've never met anyone who wasn't important."
