Um, no, it isn't. 13 episodes are 273 to 286 minutes of content, which is more than 270. Not by much, I admit. I suppose in some cases there might be "Previously on [x]" footage to make it even closer, but even then I don't think it would go under 270. -- My webpage is at http://www.watt-evans.com --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus

Not by much, I admit. I suppose in some cases > there might be "Previously on [x]" footage to make it even closer, but > even then I don't think it would go under 270. Are you sure? A 90 minute episode of Sherlock will also skip two sets of beginning and ending credits, compared with 3 "30 minute" episodes. I don't count credits as "original footage". I know that back when I was making 'Law and Order' DVDs for my Dad in Estonia, episodes ran 43 minutes *with* credits, and closer to 41 without. Anyway, regardless of whether 3 Sherlock episodes is equivalent to 12 or 13 US "30 minute" episodes, the point is that it may be a 3 episode 'season', but you aren't getting massively shortchanged. Now, if we could get the 'sciencey' channels to run documentaries where the last minute before each ad isn't a breathless promise of the wonders you'll behold if you hang around, and the first post-ad minute isn't a recap of the show so far, I'd be much happier. They're even worse than the dramas. pt

A run of Sherlock is 270 minutes. So 13 episodes of a 30 minute show with ads is about the same as three Sherlocks, as Lawrence said, at 276 minutes. In 2009, the average prime-time hour was 36% commercials of one sort or
another. Which would make a half-hour show consist of only 20 minutes
and 6 seconds of actual show, for 261 minutes and 18 seconds of show in
13 episodes.

BBC broadcast TV does also have small gaps between shows, for announcements and trailers, so, they're usually a little short of the hour or the half-hour. But sometimes an irregular length, and other programmes have to be fitted around the odd one. Otherwise I suppose they'd lose 2 minutes on the annual war remembrance observance and never get back to the right time for programmes... well, once every 30 years.

IMDB tells me that the first season episodes of Sherlock were 88, 89, and 89 minutes long. Compare 'Big Bang Theory' The previous 3 episodes are 19 minutes each (I'm not counting tonights, the Thanksgiving special). 19 x 13 = 247 minutes. Note that that includes probably a minute of credits and bumpers each, so about 234 minutes of actual drama. Compare that to 264 minutes for the first season of Sherlock. Even if we knock a very generous 15 minutes off the total for credits on the 3 episodes, its still way ahead. pt

It also says, "For the first time since the programme returned in 2005, the majority of the episodes are grouped into multi-part stories; all episodes from this series bar one are grouped into four two-parters and one three-parter. 'Sleep No More' is the only stand-alone story of the series." So assuming (a) Wikipedia didn't misquote, and (b) BBC didn't lie to them, "SNM" is a once-off, in which case (as I said upthread) it's a nightmare; and the final three are a three-parter. We'll have to wait and see. -- Dorothy J. Heydt Vallejo, California djheydt at gmail dot com

They lost me with the origin of the monsters. There are some
obvious things you could do to get monsters out of a "no-sleep"
machine, but that wasn't one of them.
I have to admit that Katie liked it, though.
