The previous version, late 1950's I guess, was a lot less real. I can remember watching it on TV as a child, when colour TV was new and exciting. The guy finds plants and water, hooray, and another scene where there is a terrifying alien encounter that turns out to be the tail of the ships experimental monkey.

I saw the movie you're thinking of, "Robinson Crusoe on Mars". Of course this 
movie isn't a remake of that one, but the basic premise is similar.
