The Potency of Ungovernable Impulses (Investigations of Mossa and Pleiti, volume 3) by Malka Older Petanj needs an Investigator. What Petanj gets is a well-meaning academic. https://jamesdavisnicoll.com/review/of-stout-heart-and-true -- My reviews can be found at http://jamesdavisnicoll.com/ My tor pieces at https://www.tor.com/author/james-davis-nicoll/ My Dreamwidth at https://james-davis-nicoll.dreamwidth.org/ My patreon is at https://www.patreon.com/jamesdnicoll

Back in the day, a local college employed me as an adjunct faculty
member. And Ziff-Davis (ZD) and other publishers paid me to write.
ZD is a 1938 Gernsback associate. At times if felt like Gernsback's
geist squeezed me harder than a nigh empty tube of toothpaste to force
words out as cheaply as possible.

Casper College had a murder in 2012. The victims lived a couple of
blocks away. One victim passed on the sidewalk outside her house.
This same sidewalk's frequently traversed by me during dark Winter
dog walks, while audio-books play through my earbuds. Flocks of demons
feasted on the carnage long afterward. Their lingering presence is
still felt by me to this very day during dark Winter dog walks.

So I just consider it Science Fantasy to set up the atmospheric (no pun) backdrop for the stories. I liked this one better than #2, which was a short one that really gave short shrift to the actual mystery. Brian
