My cousin used to run that show. She had to dump the muckraking gig when she married the last Liberal west of Winnipeg. I can remember being 12 years old, listening to the transistor after dark, under the covers,* DXing various rock and roll stations across North America. WABC, New York was a great station, but "across the fruited plain" other sticks would often break songs first, while Musicradio 77's PD, Rick Sklar, was more cautious about "adds" to the playlist in the USA's largest market. I could tune in CKLW, Windsor ON, and they would always break new "Guess Who" songs. I heard "American Woman," the first time on CKLW. The same for Alice Cooper's "I'm Eighteen." Alice had Canadian producers on some of his early sides, and that might have allowed "The Big 8" to spin his disc a bit more often in the face of Canadian Content rules. Or, CKLW PD Rosalie Trombley just liked the sounds! Kevin R * "Do you remember lying in bed with your covers pulled up over your head? Radio playin' so no one can see." I sure did. Just about everything the Beatles did is 50 years or more old. Next
year it will all be 50 years old. Geez, now I feel old.

58 if you count Johnny Duncan's original recording.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3lBILDDF3I
61 if you count the Sparks' "Merry, Merry Lou," which
"inspired" Gene Pitney to write HML.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1e4gzEVPvs
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hello_Mary_Lou#Plagiarism_controversy
That's as old as Sputnik 1! Between The Sparks version and
Duncan's 17 sf mags folded!
"That's All Right , Mama" was released in 1946 by
Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup. That's 72 years, but only 64
if you are counting from Elvis' cover. Crudup used some
verses from a Blind Lemon Jefferson tune, circa 1926,
which gave a title to a Sam Jackson film 80 years later.

The origins of "House of the Rising Sun" are lost in time, but it's
been traced back to somewhere around the middle of the 19th century.
"Amazing Grace" dates to the 18th century -- 1779, to be exact, when
it was written by John Newton, describing his own conversion. (And it
pisses me off when I see it credited as "Trad." It's by John Newton,
dammit!)
Both have been pop hits in my lifetime. These things happen.

They made up in 2000 according to Wikipedia. Another hearing on the subject of time flying - a different radio piece played an archive interview and then we were asked to marvel at such an un-modern point of view (which I've forgotten; I think it may have been "choosing not to tell some friends or colleagues that you're gay") being expressed so very recently... as 1970. So fifty years ago, near as.
