I didn't intend a YASID and I don't recall a story
where language gets someone caught out as anachronistic,
although I envisaged that in the other direction, visiting
the past and embarrassing yourself. After all, everyone
in rasfw got here by travelling through time from the past.
Some are /really/ good at it.

I doubt there's time for it to come up -but it may - in:
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_After_Time_%281979_film%29>

Unrelatedly, I vaguely remembered "cognomen" apparently
being used in the 1950s mock "schoolboy" writing of the
character Nigel Molesworth, including parodical
form-filling which seemed to imply, rather incorrectly,
that "cognomen" is merely a synonym for "name".
I threw it in anyway with some others... then noticed that
my idea of how to spell "sobriquet" was wrong as well,
but coincided with an archaic form. So those are probably
not specific story elements.

Barney Baker takes a .45 automatic pistol along with him when he travels
back to 1776 in "Rescue into the Past" (Farley). Caroline, from 1776,
notices Barney's strange manner of speaking but nothing further comes
from it.
She smiled and said, "Master Baker, wouldst have some savory
stew?" Her voice was as sweet as her face and figure.
"You betcha!" I answered. "I mean I wouldst."
She dimpled. "I hope that thou art to be trusted, Master Baker.
Our men ought not to rebuff aid from whatever quarter."
"You took the words right out of mouth," I said.
"Thou hast a quaint manner of speech, Master Baker. But come,
let me feed thee thy broth, for they hands are pinioned."
(That passage was accurately transcribed by me. But it sounds
awkward, as though a "thou" and a "my" are missing.)
Dan in _The Man Who Folded Himself_ (Gerrold) reckons that he can
travel a couple of hundred years either way from 1975. Outside of 1775
to 2175 "the languages are difficult: the meanings have altered, the
pronunciations and usages too complex to decipher."
Nobody in San Francisco seems to notice Wells' archaic English in
_Time After Time_. It probably sounds simply British to San Franciscans,
who lack a discerning ear for contemporary British English.
As you say, everyone alive time travels into the future. "Time for
Sale" (Farley) speeds up entropy inside an enclosed glass cage to move
people into the future at a faster rate. During the course of a single
night travelers age a couple of weeks inside the glass cage.
Relative time's reversed in the enclosed entropy cages known as
bobbles in _The Peace War_ (Vinge). Time passes much more slowly inside
the bobble as it races by outside.

I don't quite get the idea of "Time for Sale" as you
describe it. Presumably you get to spend time in the
box doing something useful besides getting somewhat
older. There's an episode of _Kurt Busiek's Astro City_
where Earth's top magician, The Silver Adept, needs her
assistant to do a lot of book research quickly, so puts
the assistant in a dimension where relative time makes
that possible. And something similar in a Doctor Who
comics story involving space werewolves.

Not really related but in _2000 AD_ they just ran a
_Strontium Dog_ story where - spoiler - an evil robot
that was basically indestructible was defeated by using
a time device which briefly paused time where the robot
was standing; since planets move, it rematerialised
out in space - he dead. But, it's an indestructible
robot... let's see what happens in next week's episode.
Actually there isn't one, but you see what I mean.

"Time for Sale" opens with Tom Porter, a college football captain who
needs two weeks of tutoring before he takes tomorrow's Physics final
exam. After Tom kills the exam, Dr Hatch and Tom kick around potential
uses for Hatch's entropy cage.
Contractors can always use extra time to prepare a bid by a
deadline. Lawyers can thoroughly prepare for the next day's court
session. The Department of War (in "Time for Sale"'s 1938 nomenclature)
can develop new weapons practically overnight.
"The New Accelerator" (Wells) uses hypophosphites to metabolically
speed up a time traveler. Potential uses imagined by Wells include two
found in the Farley: cramming for an exam and court trial preparation.
Wells also imagines additional uses in diplomacy, dueling, and story
writing. (In real life, stimulates enabled PKD write novels in a few
weeks.)
It takes only eight days to die from old age in "Frost and Fire"
(Bradbury). An alien Sun's radiation accelerates metabolism in the
humans trapped on one of its planets. Bradbury imagines no good use for
such an involuntary predicament.

Google has several copies of your (D B Davis) post.

"The New Accelerator" was not strictly a time physics thing,
but metabolic. I was somehow expecting he story to reveal
awful misuses of it e.g. making miners, factory workers etc.
do a month's work for a day'd wages, away from their family.
Instead we got advance publicity for the stuff coming on
the market. Perhaps you were supposed to think of the
disadvantages yourself. Perhaps Wells was just having fun.

How can google be a master of the universe if its too incompetent to
properly process a simple Supersedes: header? That header's been part of
the NNTP protocol for decades.
It makes me wonder what else they f'up. ROTFL. Oh well, everyone

Given how it (and cancel) has been abused (and how long ago that
began), is there *any* NNTP server that honors it any more?

The first seven open NNTP servers inspected by me are all competent
enough to properly process a Supersedes: header:

news.bbs.nz
news.eternal-september.org
News.MB-Net.NET
news.uni-stuttgart.de
news.informatik.uni-stuttgart.de
news2.neva.ru
nntp.aioe.org

My own NNTP server also properly processes Supersedes: headers.
databasix.com supposedly mishandles Supersedes: according to the
people who use databasix to post to alt.flame, alt.troll,
alt.usenet.kooks, et al.

It's possible his NNTP client honors it instead of relying on the server.

If you see a 'ghost' than Supersede: actually works better than
expected. You probably see the artifacts of a NNTP race condition that
occurs whenever an article's header gets out of sync with its body.
That sort of thing can happen to me when my news browser is
connected to an external news server and an earlier version of one of my
articles is pulled in between Supersedes: In my case, both versions end
up in my browser's cache and neither is 'ghosted.' So that's why the
'ghosts' that you see are actually an improvement over my own setup.
Of all things, lynx actually does the best job with external news
servers. For instance, it displays:

     * Status (ARTICLE 492149): 423 No such article number 492149

There's plenty of other people who post Supersedes: to rasw.
Sometimes lynx shows a string of half-a-dozen of other people's
Supersedes: posted over a period of seconds, or minutes at most.

Having been raised Catholic, I was given a saint's name as a first
name, and another one as a middle name. My surname (family name)
is based on a third saint's name, or rather, a diminutive of one.
That's 3 "Christian names," or near enough. At the age of 10 I was
duped into undergoing the rite of Confirmation, at which point I
picked another saint's name. I don't use that any more, but some of
my siblings remember it.

Two of my sisters have "double first names" of the "Mary Ann"
format, so they have five names.

In Irish-American Catholic families, the anger of your parent at
whatever your latest infraction of the rules was could be estimated
by how many names were used to call you to account. "Michael
Patrick Ignatius Fitzgerald!!" was in so much more trouble than
"Mike," "Michael," or even "Michael Patrick!" At least he never
got the "five-name call-out."

I have a brother who married a Cuban-American, so their kids could
add the second family name if they so pleased.

LWE's LW-E "nom de plume" is a "double-barreled surname," a
wonderful term I just found.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-barrelled_name

I think I'd choose Browning-Mossberg if I needed one of those. {)

The glorious-sounding "praenomen."

Don't forget how all Sikh men use "Singh" and the women
traditionally use "Kaur."

Some people, notably including S.M. Stirling in at least one of the SCA Rides
Again! stories, mistranslate ‘Kaur’ as ‘Lioness’, given that
‘Singh’ is ‘Lion’. Nope, that’s not it. Others, including
Wikipedia, say that ‘Kaur’ means ‘Princess’. According to
unimpeachable sources who may read this and would hurt me if I didn’t make
the right and proper translation, ‘Kaur’ means ‘Prince’, because all
Sikh women are at least equal to all Sikh men, meaning that they are vastly
superior to non-Sikh men.

See, I posted it. You can put the tulwar down now...

I did an election census one year for my area. Around here, the Singh
/ Kaur are used as middle names, while distinctive names are used for
first names.

I'm familiar with this (though no one in my family had more than three
names), but my parents did not do it. Instead, you sometimes knew
what my parents wanted by what language they called you in. If my Dad
called me in Russian ("Lavrenti Gordonovich Ivanov!"), it meant I had
missed a previous call and he was determined to get my attention this
time.
