I have no idea what her real name was--for a while I had her on my car insurance and one day I got a call from the insurer saying that the State of Connecticut had no record of such a person ever having existed--apparently she had a fake driver's license.

I do sympathize. These days, both my first and last names are gender
neutral first names. And both last names, for that matter. (I was
named after a man named John Terry.)
I could marry a woman named Austin Terry. She could be Austin Austin,
or I could take her name and be Terry Terry. Or we could hyphenate,
and go for the Bond, James Bond vibe.

I am not, though I've been accused of that many times. I wouldn't

I have an easy detector for people trying to spam my husband on the phone (it's right by the bed, so I'm the one that answers it). There was a nice discussion on Baen Free Radio talking about Weber (or possibly his Brains Trust) finding a historical analog of a situation he was thinking of plotting and deciding that he couldn't get away with it "It's not enough for it to have happened. It has to be plausible as well."

OK, so your working definition of gothic piqued my interest enough to
research gothic "tells" or the things that readers find in a gothic
story. _The Haunting of Hill House_ (Jackson) seemed a shoo-in.
One thing led to another until Wikipedia's Gothic fiction [1]
article popped up. Wikipedia claims that one of my favorite authors,
Edgar Allan Poe, writes gothic horror. So far, so good.
Next thing you know, Viy, lord of the underworld, (Gogol) comes into
view. [2] What in hell is that creature and where in the hell are its
eyes?
Note.

I checked again - _The Name of the Rose_ is set about 50 years before <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Schism> I haven't read it very closely either and I am not sure what requires it to be be in the 14th century - but it is. So it's about 20 years after the Knights Templar were shut down, for instance. > I would like to write the Gothic Gothic, just for Randall, but > I'd have to do a whole lot more research into the sixth century. > As for modern Gothitude, all I'd have to do is ask my daughter. :) > > -- > Dorothy J. I was unable to make myself read Gregory of Tours' "History of the Franks" (576) but the introduction to the Penguin edition was an education in itself. The insanely vile Frankish nobles, male and female, busily killing off their sibling's children so as to ensure their own surviving children's succession to the throne of a small bit of France, contrasted with Gregory's own family, where he was a saint, his uncle was a saint, his uncle's kid, his predecessor as bishop, just about everyone was a saint. Probably including some of the murderers. Approximately. I lost track of the saints after the first few. And Gregory's family considered themselves to be senatorial, though the Senate hadn't sat in over a hundred years at this point. What's the line from Tolkien? Something like "Old men shut themselves up in their castles and studied their pedigrees". Sounds ideal for you. William Hyde

You might have a look at Gothic Spain. It had castles (there’s a _reason_ why a large chunk of Spain is called ‘Castile’), and Goths, and Visigoths, and Franks, and Vandals. And Moors (lots of Moors, of many varieties, some of which hated some of the other varieties more than they hated the assorted Christians). And Jews. And Greeks. And, towards the end, Vikings, original variety, and Vikings, Frenchified variety, a.k.a. Normans. There’s plenty of room for all sorts of women in peril and dark castles and dashing knights (of many possible faiths or no faith at all) and forbidden (or at least ill-advised) romances and deeds of both glory and infamy. Santiago!

I'll look it up. I was thinking a Gothic Gothic would > have to be set in Italy, in the Kingdom of the Goths and Italians > (cf. deCamp, _Lest Darkness Fall_), but maybe not. you could also try a modern Gothic, love in suburbia. See http://www.gocomics.com/pearlsbeforeswine/2017/12/31 for an example.
