Thank you Greg. This part of the story reminds me of rasw. :0)
I'd bet that three quarters of this bunch is borderline
autistic. Me, I'm just an @sshole.
My Hurricane Katrina news came from two New Orleans bloggers. One of
them was a Central American who worked at a local restaurant. Each day
he walked around, took about one hundred pictures, captioned them, and
then posted them to his blog. His blog eventually had about five hundred
captioned photos, IIRC. He had no political ax to grind, he just
reported what he saw and felt. Unfortunately his blog went net dead
within a year.
The other blogger operated from a high rise office building. He reminded
me of Felix in "Overclocked." This blogger used the building's emergency
generator to keep the local server and router in his "command post"
accessible by the Inet. He worried about running out of diesel fuel for
the generator. But a truck filled with 55 gallon drums of diesel fuel
arrived in the nick of time.

I'm not sure whether the timeline works for him to have inspired Sysadmins. (Overclocked was the book it was originally published in.) -- We are geeks. Resistance is voltage over current.

That didn't end in apocalypse, though. Fragmentation of North America into about
15 different countries, yes -- but they practically all have border guards and
passports, and everybody takes American Express or Visa, and you can buy a Coke
on L5.

Wasn't that the main driver of the collapse in Gordon R. Dickson's 'Wolf
