James H Schmitz - Watch The Sky (short story) From: Analog, August 1962 http://www.gutenberg.org/files/24558/24558-h/24558-h.htm It is on Gutenberg in its original (pre-Baen) form with some nice illustrations by Hortens so you not only get a good story you also get a good idea of why Analog, Amazing, FSF, etc were so popular.

Thank you. What a great little story.
These days they actually get away with using "Too Big Too Fail" (TBTF)
to refer to the designated winners of government largesse. In the story
the government only becomes suspictious when masterminds who are not
part of the TBTF win. Yeah. That just about sums it up. Thank you again.

Hey, nobody mentioned Andre Norton or Clifford D. Simak.
I get a kick out of re-reading these authors because their stories
were almost immune to technological advances (so far). The usual
exceptions are computers and cell phones (seems like nobody
was willing to follow the expontential curve).
Andre Norton: The Sargasso of Space
Clifford Simak: Way Station
(of course, lots more examples....)

Bear in mind that when Norton was writing some of those stories the transistor was new, the inteegrated circuit was in the future, and microprocessors with today's performance were almost unimaginable (I remember even in the '80s people who owned micros thought that they would never match the performance of a '60s mainframe, let alone hammer a Cray XMP into the dust with 3 cores tied behind their backs.

Still popular in some sense - both of my kids were assigned to read
The Veldt in middle school (by different teachers) as were my wife
and I (in different schools). This may be a cyclical/generational
effect driven by the teachers, of course.

The first such assignment for me was 6th grade english, with a reprise in 8th grade American Lit., and again in 10th grade english, when we went through a boxed Fantasy and Fiction unit in the second semester. And I when I say "boxed", I mean it quite literally - the entire unit came as one large-ish box stenciled "Class-in-a-box - Fiction" containing two smaller boxes - one with about 40 copies of a not-quite-paperback, not-quite-textbook volume containing Bradbury's "The Veldt" and McCaffrey's "Weyr Search", along with 4-5 other stories I (mercifully, I suspect) can't remember anymore - and another filled with stacks of pre-dittoed worksheets and multiple-guess tests for each story, some posters, and a "canned" lesson plan/discussion guide for the teacher) -- Security provided by Mssrs Smith and/or Wesson. I don't even know "The Veldt" (googles) Ah. Never finished that one.
But it was never assigned to me. What's your age cohort? I'm 53. There
wasn't a single SF-anything I can recall being assigned to me (aside
from Shakespeare's "The Tempest" or similar) in my entire school career.
At least until I took a college course ON SF.
