I was going to suggest asking for the software to be officially installed so everyone can use it, but the systems I'm familiar with require the software to be registered to the person who has the ebook checked out. Some systems - Overdrive, at least - allow most ebooks to be read in a web browser. No software required. I imagine you'd have noticed if that was an option, but maybe not. You could always ask for the library to purchase the physical book. No idea if they would, of course. My library doesn't get many purchase requests, for whatever reason, so I tend to buy anything people ask for as long as I can at least vaguely justify it as belonging in the collection. David DeLaney suggested interlibrary loan. That's a good idea for most books, but I just checked Worldcat and this one is only owned by four libraries in America. Denver, Omaha and two libraries in Florida and New Hampshire. Be worth a shot, though. Now, on to actual recommendations. I'm not sure of your definition of Heinlein- or Piper-esque, but most of these hit some of the same buttons for me as the Heinlein juveniles I've read. Some are just books I trot out anytime someone asks for recommendations. Wildside by Steven Gould - A high schooler finds a portal to another world in the barn out back and enlists his friends in an attempt to get to Stage Three: Profit! 7th Sigma by Steven Gould - Ten or fifteen years ago a horde of mechanical bugs descended upon the American Southwest. They eat anything metal and use it to make more bugs, and they'll burrow through dirt, stone and flesh to get to the metal. They also attack anything broadcasting radio waves, whether it's metal or not. People still live in the area, using a combination of primitive technology and high-tech non-metallic tools crafted outside of the area the bugs control. The main character is a young kid who's more or less adopted by a woman who's emigrated to the area to start an aikido dojo, if that's the right term. It's a good coming of age story with a really fascinating setting. Dark Life by Kat Falls - rising sea-waters and some truly horrific earthquakes have greatly reduced the dry living space in the US, so a number of undersea communities have sprung up in the aftermath. One of our heroes is a boy who was born and has lived his entire life underwater, hardly ever coming to the surface. The other is a girl who has run away from her orphanage/school to look for her older brother. Together, they fight underwater crime! Not so much by choice, mind you. Wearing The Cape by Marion G Harmon. Ten or twelve years ago people started developing super-powers. The world that's resulted is less like our own than most comic book settings, but more like our own than is probably realistic, but that's enough for me to suspend disbelief. Our heroine is a young lady who develops Superman-like powers after a terrorist drops a bridge on her. Well, he was aiming for a politician but hit lots of other people, too. She has to be trained to use her powers safely, and is definitely of the "great responsibility" mindset so she ends up joining the local super-team. Another story where an interesting setting is gradually revealed. Poor Man's Fight by Elliott Kay. An intelligent young man in a space-opera-ish setting is forced to join the military instead of going to college after he bombs the aptitude test which is administered by a company that decides how much you have to pay them for college based on how you do on their test. He gets many chances to show he's very good at being a soldier, even though he really, really does not care for it.

Joss Whedon emphatically states that the Browncoat's cause did not
include slavery. In _Serenity - The Official Visual Companion_ Whedon
says:
The basic tenet was that [Firefly] was [analogous to the
post-United States Civil War] Reconstruction era. Mal had
fought for the South - not for slavery, I can't stress that
enough [laughs], but for [the losing side].
Mal's first mate Zoe Washburne is swarthy. She's also a veteran
Browncoat.
On a different note, Mal wears a woman's bonnet and dress to disguise
himself in the "Our Mrs Reynolds" episode. Even though Zoe, who sits
nearby in the back of Mal's covered wagon, *is* a woman.
(Perhaps only a Captain such as Mal is allowed to hold the reins? Back
in the day sudhaus rumor had it that Augie Gussie Busch was very
possessive of the reins of his Clydesdales.)
LWE wrote an essay for _finding Serenity_ named "The Heirs of Sawney
Beane." It's a story that creeps out most everyone who hears about it
from my lips.
