The backstory of "two by two, hands of blue" marginally intrigues me.
Perhaps Whedon simply notes the enhanced chemical resistance of nitrile
gloves and then puts them on his villains as a visual hand armor
advantage. End of story.
The Dark Horse shows protrusions in the blue undergarment that suggest
metallic matter. Some speculate that the "hands of blue" belong to
cyborgs. And that's why they remain untouched by a hand-held ?proximity?
weapon that kills all of the people close-by.

Thank you for a memorable short story. It's my first Smith. :)
Smith's story contains lots of parallels to Whedon's. The invented new
crimes of *Old Twenty-two* - "crimes which a million years of earth's
old wickedness had never brought to the surface of man before," aptly
fits the behavior of Whedon's Reavers. The ugliness of Reavers surpasses
that of Talatashar.
Whedon actually freezes his heroine River and puts her into a pod. He
has River's brother use a trigger word to make her pass out when she
starts acting out.
But River's "two by two, hands of blue" vastly differs from Veesey's
"conjuring spell" of "Think Blue, Count Two." In River's case it's more
of a dreadful foreboding.

At that time the sailing imagery didn't make a lot of sense so the novel got dropped. OTOH the short story's short enough to embolden me to just go ahead and take the plunge into Smith's sailing imagery. Now it makes sense to me. Next up are the stories suggested by Anthony Nance: "Mother Hitton's Littul Kittens" and "Golden the Ship Was-Oh! Oh! Oh!." (Provided that they're in my pulp collection.) -- Don Kuenz KB7RPU

Probably quite a lot. By the way, those are the top two listings at https://www.acronymfinder.com/RPG.html. Also in the Top Ten is "Rounds Per Gun," which I imagine may also show up in present-day or futuristic games. (Also, "Repeating Plasma Gun" if the game is Star Wars-based.) Rebounds Per Game is, I think, somewhat less likely to occur. --wds (and let's not even get into the Rape Prevention Glasses)

I suppose it depends how hard you throw your dice.

Hmph. They're not so bad-looking, relaly. Verizon used to have
a guy wearing them on posters touting their product, as if to
say, "We are nerdy engineers, we understand electronics." I
always thought that guy was rather cute. But then I've been
married to an engineer for, hmm, coming up on 45 years.
