I've read that people (generally) interpret deeper voices as
soothing, higher voices as alarming; which is why women's voices
are used for recorded emergency warning and so forth.

ObSF: _The Andromeda Strain,_ wherein the youngest (male)
scientist tries to chat up the "luscious" voice of the computer,
till he is told that the voice belongs to a little old lady from
Omaha who records emergency messages for a living.
