...Er, you do realize that you're responding to an article that's more
than 13 years old?  Have a look at the date in the attribution line above.

Anyway, I too have read the story:  it is "Of Missing Persons", by
Jack Finney.

Further, I've read that anthology: _Tales of Time and Space_, edited by
Ross R. Olney for Whitman Books.  It was a Christmas present from my
family's housekeeper when I was not yet five years old, and I'm pretty
sure it was the first science fiction book I ever read.  I still have it.
It was a curious mixture:  some excellent, adult stories like Fredric
Brown's "Puppet Show", and some awful pulpy junk like Larry Sternig's
"Clutch of Morpheus".
