do the "OMNI" scanners work with RFID'ed debit/credit
cards, or only with OMNI's own system?

Thanks

Yes, they work with credit cards. If you sign up at omny.info you
can add credit cards to your account and see your charges. If you're
over 65 you can with some pain associate a reduced fare senior card
(formerly a physical Metrocard) with one of your credit cards.

Today I was on hold for quite a while as it counted down from 61
people on line ahead of me until I talked to a helpful woman who
moved my reduced fare from my old Amex card to the new one they just
sent that has a different account number.

Thanks. I (sniff) am ensconced in flyover country so this would
be an occassional endeavor, and I'll pay full price...

As mentioned elsewhere, with credit/debit cards. And with smart phone
wallets (not that I know how exactly how that works).
