HOBBS, N.M. (KFOX14/CBS4) — A teacher remains hospitalized in Lubbock after being shot multiple times by a student Friday morning at Highland Middle School in Hobbs, according to Hobbs Police. Hobbs Police Chief James Jones said officers were dispatched to the school around 11:39 a.m. after receiving a report of a stabbing. Officers were later informed that the incident involved a shooting. Police said the juvenile male suspect was described as a white male wearing a black hoodie and pants, with a long white shirt underneath. According to investigators, the suspect was inside the school for morning classes before exiting through the rear doors of the building between classes. Police said the teacher, identified as Kelly Mathews, was inside the building and walked through the back door. When he turned the corner, he encountered the juvenile, who then began firing at him. The suspect fled the area following the shooting and was later detained by law enforcement. Once police confirmed the scene was clear, students were released to their loved ones. The school also sent out a notification confirming that all students were safe. The teacher remains hospitalized in Lubbock. The investigation remains ongoing. Chief Jones said investigators will thoroughly investigate the case and use what they learn to help improve safety moving forward. The press conference was attended by Chief Jones, Lieutenant David Torres, Hobbs Superintendent Gene Strickland, and Hobbs Mayor Jonathan Sena. https://kfoxtv.com/news/local/hobbs-police-hold-press- conference-following-highland-middle-school-shooting
