| Message-ID | <nni3n9$r9c$1@news.albasani.net> |
<html>
<head>
<title>HTAWINDOW</title>
</head>
<body>
<script language="vbscript">
Window.resizeTo 450,300
</script>
BACKUP wird ausgeführt, bitte warten...
</body>
</html>
als message.hta speichern und ausführen mit
Set Obj = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
Obj.run "message.hta",1,false

Hello,
I am afraid "ohne Benutzerklick" was the key expression, with this
confirmation : "Eine MsgBox kommt deshalb nicht in Frage"
that you could translate by "please no msgbox", the user must not have
to click anywhere. The message tells "backup in progress, please wait",
so closing the window must not be performed by a click on a button, but
by the end of the backup made by the caller.
So, a window with no button at all could rather be that. In the spirit,
the ideal solution would be showing a progressbar, but this was not
asked, not sure the caller has any way to update it ...
But obj.Run does not return the window as an object, that the caller
could close when the backup treatment is at the end.
This would surely be the best way to answer, another way is to select
the window by the APIs, but then I am afraid you have to use a program
to do that.
Well, I did such things in VB, but not in VBS. Any idea ?
Or shall we answer that chosing another language would be a better idea ?

The calling window can close the window by: objNewWindow.Close
The window itself can close by: Window.Close
That does not mean a "Benutzerklick" [user-click] is needed.
The VBS code in the same or the calling page can poll the server with
xmlhttp at reasonable intervals to see if the process is finished.
[or even how far the process is in execution.]
I think this works in HTA too.
> Well, I did such things in VB, but not in VBS. Any idea ?
You cannot "do" VB in HTA or HTML.

I would prefer to do clientside javascript and serverside VBS,
but that is just my personal lazyness.
Or do you mean that we should converse in German or any other language?
... to close the windows for the evening breeze?

Oh sorry, I think I mixed up both windows ...
So, the caller can do something as :
________________________________________
Set objNewWindow = Window.Open("Message.hta", "myWindowOne",
"toolbar=no, menubar=no, location=no, directories=no")
DoTheBackup
objNewWindow.Close()
________________________________________
And ... that's it :)

In fact this is an English speaking forum, maybe Wendelin forgot.
If he happens not to understand we shall see.

Might work pretty well, but I would like to have a window close tool
independent of an opening task, something like a task killer for a window
only. Ok, I could create an exe showing the window and killing the exe
afterwards, but this seems to be be a big overhead. I'm not familiar with
.hta files, they show a window using the default browser - but how could I
close only *this* window and not all eventually running browser windows?

Wendelin,
> but how could I close only *this* window and not all
> eventually running browser windows?
Look at the code you quoted: the "Set objNewWindow =" creates an object
which remembers which window it/you just created. The
"objNewWindow.Close()" line than closes that created window, and only that
one.
Comparision: in a programming langage of your choice you can open a file and
and close it, while all other files remain open. This due to something
referred to as a "file handle".
You can regard the "objNewWindow" as a handle to the window you just opened.
Hope that helps.

Rudy Wieser

Hello,
It appeared a good idea to make a test.
While doing that, following elements appeared :
- the window object is not recognized by cscript, wscript, you have to
write an html document
- files with extensions htm or html are not allowed to execute a script
with elements on the disk, for instance a backup or another script : you
must write an hta file with the code hereunder
- an hta file is executed in an independent window, not in a tab, so
closing its window will not close documents
- my default browser is Firefox, but hta files are executed with IE8 (on
Windows XP)
- by default, when your script asks to run message.hta, the user has to
click on "Run" for it to be executed (and display the message)
- you can have an anti-virus that prevents hta scripts to be executed
except if the user clicks on a button to authorize it each time (or the
admin must put it in the white list)
- as of my tests, the syntax "objNewWindow.Close", with or without
parenthesis, must be improved.
Here is the code of TstMsg.hta. I put a Test button, later you can link
TestL to body.onload.

So, probably it will be much more simple to display the message in this window. You can do it visible or not with style="display:block" or style="display:none". If you like you can close the window just with "Close", it runs jolly good. In fact, possibly you will decide you only make the message invisible once the backup is at the end, and let the window open. This will avoid the user to wonder whether the window disappeared because it crashed. Nevertheless, do not forget to provide a way for the backup to provide a feed back, for the user to be sure everything ran OK. Perhaps it writes a log, for instance.

Why that difficult ?
#1. open the window
#2. run VBS backup code (can be part of the HTA / does not need to be an
external script!)
#3. close the window
#4. profit ? :-)
(can read German well enough. Writing it is a whole other matter. :-) )
