#1282980 — [PATCH v9 0/3] mtd: nand: jz4780: Add NAND and BCH drivers

FromHarvey Hunt <harvey.hunt@imgtec.com>
Date2015-12-03 13:10 +0100
Subject[PATCH v9 0/3] mtd: nand: jz4780: Add NAND and BCH drivers
Message-ID<qBARY-4KT-5@gated-at.bofh.it>
Hi,

This series adds support for the BCH controller and NAND devices on
the Ingenic JZ4780 SoC.

Tested on the MIPS Creator Ci20 board. All dependencies are now in
mainline.

This version of the series is based on 4.4-rc3.

As suggested by Boris [0], refactoring work has been done to treat NAND
chips as children nodes of the NAND controller.

Review and feedback welcome.

Thanks,

Harvey

+* Ingenic JZ4780 NAND/BCH
+
+This file documents the device tree bindings for NAND flash devices on the
+JZ4780. NAND devices are connected to the NEMC controller (described in
+memory-controllers/ingenic,jz4780-nemc.txt), and thus NAND device nodes must
+be children of the NEMC node.
+
+Required NAND controller device properties:
+- compatible: Should be set to "ingenic,jz4780-nand".
+- reg: For each bank with a NAND chip attached, should specify a bank number,
+ an offset of 0 and a size of 0x1000000 (i.e. the whole NEMC bank).
+
+Optional NAND controller device properties:
+- ingenic,bch-controller: To make use of the hardware BCH controller, this
+ property must contain a phandle for the BCH controller node. The required
+ properties for this node are described below. If this is not specified,
+ software BCH will be used instead.
+
+Optional children nodes:
+- Individual NAND chips are children of the NAND controller node.
+
+Required children node properties:
+- reg: An integer ranging from 1 to 6 representing the CS line to use.
+
+Optional children node properties:
+- nand-ecc-step-size: ECC block size in bytes.
+- nand-ecc-strength: ECC strength (max number of correctable bits).
+- nand-ecc-mode: String, operation mode of the NAND ecc mode. "hw" by default
+- nand-on-flash-bbt: boolean to enable on flash bbt option, if not present false
+- rb-gpios: GPIO specifier for the busy pin.
+- wp-gpios: GPIO specifier for the write protect pin.
+
+Optional child node of NAND chip nodes:
+- partitions: see Documentation/devicetree/bindings/mtd/partition.txt
+
+Example:
+
+nemc: nemc@13410000 {
+	...
+
+	nandc: nand-controller@1 {
+		compatible = "ingenic,jz4780-nand";
+		reg = <1 0 0x1000000>;	/* Bank 1 */
+
+		#address-cells = <1>;
+		#size-cells = <0>;
+
+		ingenic,bch-controller = <&bch>;
+
+		nand@1 {
+			reg = <1>;
+
+			nand-ecc-step-size = <1024>;
+			nand-ecc-strength = <24>;
+			nand-ecc-mode = "hw";
+			nand-on-flash-bbt;
+
+			rb-gpios = <&gpa 20 GPIO_ACTIVE_LOW>;
+			wp-gpios = <&gpf 22 GPIO_ACTIVE_LOW>;
+
+			partitions {
+				#address-cells = <2>;
+				#size-cells = <2>;
+				...
+			}
+		};
+	};
+};
+
+The BCH controller is a separate SoC component used for error correction on
+NAND devices. The following is a description of the device properties for a
+BCH controller.
+
+Required BCH properties:
+- compatible: Should be set to "ingenic,jz4780-bch".
+- reg: Should specify the BCH controller registers location and length.
+- clocks: Clock for the BCH controller.
+
+Example:
+
+bch: bch@134d0000 {
+	compatible = "ingenic,jz4780-bch";
+	reg = <0x134d0000 0x10000>;
+
+	clocks = <&cgu JZ4780_CLK_BCH>;

Don't multiple flash chips typically get interleaved in order to get
parallelism needed for performance? Then the view of the partitions
would apply across all chips. Anyway, it's optional, so:

Not in MTD so far. We have mtdconcat to do some combination of flash,
but it's not too easy to use right now. There are also some "MTD RAID"
patches submitted recently that might cover what you're talking about,
but that's brand new and unreviewed, and I don't think anyone has
considered trying to handle partitions for such a thing yet.
Partitioning of this kind isn't even that useful for NAND flash,
actually, since fixed assignment of flash ranges restricts the
flexibility of UBI's wear-leveling algorithms.

It probably makes more sense to deal with UBI volumes instead of MTD
partitions when talking about NAND flash. And those aren't specified in
DT.

#1282983 — [PATCH v9 2/3] mtd: nand: jz4780: driver for NAND devices on JZ4780 SoCs

FromHarvey Hunt <harvey.hunt@imgtec.com>
Date2015-12-03 13:10 +0100
Subject[PATCH v9 2/3] mtd: nand: jz4780: driver for NAND devices on JZ4780 SoCs
Message-ID<qBARZ-4KT-19@gated-at.bofh.it>
In reply to#1282980
From: Alex Smith <alex.smith@imgtec.com>

Add a driver for NAND devices connected to the NEMC on JZ4780 SoCs, as
well as the hardware BCH controller. DMA is not currently implemented.

While older 47xx SoCs also have a BCH controller, they are incompatible
with the one in the 4780 due to differing register/bit positions, which
would make implementing a common driver for them quite messy.

Do you really need to protect accesses to the ECC engine with a

... and disable the interrupts while doing so? I mean, the MTD layer is
not supposed to call ->read()/->write() methods in irq context, so
using a mutex here should be perfectly fine (at least for the NAND
usage).

Prefer u32/u16/u8 to the standard uint32_t/uint16_t/uint8_t definitions
when you are developing kernel code.

You can just return a struct device * value and use the ERR_PTR() macro
to cast an error code to a pointer. The caller can then test for the
error case by doing IS_ERR(ret), and extract the corresponding error
using PTR_ERR().
Also, I don't think you need to return a struct device pointer here. How
about just returning a struct jz4780_bch pointer and defining an opaque
type in jz4780_bch.h (a single 'struct jz4780_bch;' statement).
This would ease public jz4780_bch_xx() functions implementation (no
need to extract the jz4780_bch pointer from the device one) and hide the
jz4780_bch internals (the user doesn't have to know that the jz4780_bch
device is actually attached to a struct device).

IO_ADDR_R/IO_ADDR_W assignments should only be done once when
instantiating/initializing the nand_chip device...

... and, as I said in my previous review, I don't think this IO_ADDR_W
pointer assignment dance is worth it. AFAICS, the only thing it is used
for are the read/write_byte/buf/word default implementation.

The following code does exactly the same, and is, IMHO, clearer than
changing the IO_ADDR_W address depending on the operation.

static void jz4780_nand_cmd_ctrl(struct mtd_info *mtd, int cmd,
				 unsigned int ctrl)

	struct jz4780_nand_cs *cs;

	if (WARN_ON(nfc->selected < 0))
		return;

	cs = &nfc->cs[nfc->selected];

	if (ctrl & NAND_CTRL_CHANGE) {
		if (cmd != NAND_CMD_NONE) {
			if (ctrl & NAND_ALE)
				writeb(cmd, cs->base + OFFSET_ADDR);
			else if (ctrl & NAND_CLE)
				writeb(cmd, cs->base + OFFSET_CMD);
		}

		jz4780_nemc_assert(nfc->dev, cs->bank, ctrl & NAND_NCE);
	}

if mode == NAND_ECC_SOFT we're not using BCH but hamming. Maybe you
don't have to be so specific. Just saying that you're using software
or hardware ECC should be enough.

Use the recently introduced
	nand_set_flash_node(chip, np);

This has recently changed: you don't have to pass the of_node through
the pdata structure anymore, it is automatically extracted from the
mtd device if you've used nand_set_flash_node().

Replace this call by

	ret = mtd_device_register(mtd, NULL, 0);

This should probably be part of the API exposed by the jz4780_bch driver.
Something like:

struct jz4780_bch *of_jz4780_bch_get(struct device_node *np)
{
	...
}

You could even provide a devm_ variant to simplify the cleanup path...

That's all I got for now :-).
BTW, thanks for reworking the driver to match the controller/chip
model.

You're right, I underestimated the amount of time the spinlock would be
held for. I also didn't realise that ->read()/->write() weren't called
in IRQ context - I'll replace the spinlock with a mutex.

I like the idea of using an opaque type, I'll do this.

You're right, I forgot about that.

I don't think you have to re-implement the {read,write}_{byte,buf,word}
functions, because you'll still assign the ->IO_ADDR_W and ->IO_ADDR_R
fields to cs->base + OFFSET_DATA in jz4780_nand_init_chip(), but maybe
I'm missing something.

Actually it should be something like this, because NAND_CTRL_CHANGE is
cleared after the first address cycle.

static void jz4780_nand_cmd_ctrl(struct mtd_info *mtd, int cmd,
 				 unsigned int ctrl)
{
	struct jz4780_nand_chip *nand = to_jz4780_nand_chip(mtd);
	struct jz4780_nand_controller *nfc = to_jz4780_nand_controller(nand->chip.controller);
	struct jz4780_nand_cs *cs;

	if (WARN_ON(nfc->selected < 0))
		return;

	cs = &nfc->cs[nfc->selected];

	jz4780_nemc_assert(nfc->dev, cs->bank, ctrl & NAND_NCE);

 	if (cmd == NAND_CMD_NONE)
		return;

	if (ctrl & NAND_ALE)
		writeb(cmd, cs->base + OFFSET_ADDR);
 	else if (ctrl & NAND_CLE)
 		writeb(cmd, cs->base + OFFSET_CMD);
}

Thanks for the example code, I'll try it out for the next version.
