Makes sense in theory, but the bug doesn't actually trigger when I
revert the patch and set CONFIG_OPTIMIZE_INLINING=n.

Perhaps even more surprising, it doesn't trigger *with* the patch and
CONFIG_OPTIMIZE_INLINING=n.
