If you really feel like it's necessary, you can reply to the thread with:
I like this proposal mainly because of A and B, but I am a bit concerned
about C. Person P. already gave an good argument as to why.

> The rules for submitting or sponsoring actual voting proposals /
> amendments etc. are clearly laid out, I don't see any danger here.
Well, I do, though none of us can see into the future.
But that makes me wonder: If you don't think likes/dislikes as present on
discourse have an influence on this: Why bother using it at all ?

And even if I only mentioned it with one sentence in the debian-vote section as
I wrote about it before: The accessibility, which would *decrease* with
discourse, (and exclude mail-interface users from the like/disliking) should be
a top priority for debian-vote.

If you want to give people more familiar with forums a familiar interface, I'd
say the reverse approach is much more feasible and does not create problems
with accessibility: Offer a forum-like front-end for the mailing list.
There are already 3rd parties offering something like that for debian
mailing-lists. One that sometimes shows up in my search results, would be nabble
(note that I'm not endorsing or recommending any such 3rd party provider)
  http://debian.2.n7.nabble.com/Debian-is-testing-Discourse-td4669989.html

If there is a need for that debian could offer something like that itself (if it
does not yet exists, didn't check).
As the backend would still be purely text based, there is no issue with
accessibility or feature exclusion.

This leaves us only with "moderation" as a _potential_ benefit of discourse as a
primary interface.
Stronger moderation with retroactive editing and deleting however, while it
night offer _some_ benefits, also creates a fair share of problems and potential
for abuse in the future.
Given the disadvantages with a forum focused interface, I don't think a
potential benefit in moderation is worth it.

About a year ago the Gnome project moved to Discourse and shut down all
of their mailing lists. I check in there from time to time as interest
in GTK development strikes and I must say that I think it is a very poor
imitation of a Web forum and I've not tried their email interface but I
cannot imagine that it would be as useful as a real mailing list.

Gnome has their Discourse set so that 14 days after the last reply a
topic is locked so no more replies may be added. I find this myopic, to
be honest, as there are many times when an answer relevant to a thread
may come months later and can be added to "close the loop" of that
particular thread. I suppose one would have to start a new thread with
a link to the old one in their case which to me just leads to
thread/forum pollution.

Put me down as not interested in seeing this list replaced in a similar
manner.

Debian is very good at accessibility, moving to something other then the
mailing lists will make accessibility less functional.

Here with Debian's mailing lists, I can interact without having to login
to a website to configure being able to use e-mails
If such a move is done, I'll have to find an other destro.

Ease of accessibility is something that you probably don't understand
from the perspective of a screenreader user.

To summerise my thoughts, from an accessibility point of view using
e-mails to interact with a webinterface is ludicrous.

I note that Discourse is not in the Debian archive.

Not that it matters, but I certainly won't use Discourse and if most
debian-user traffic were to shift to Discourse I would simply stop
subscribing.

"Ease of moderation" is *not* a plus.

Observing how zealots have moderated Norbert Preining is a perfect example of how
biased and closed-minded those moderators can be.

As Russ has described to you on the debian-project list today, the
point of the Debian lists (and other communication forums) is to
assist in developing and supporting the Debian operating system.

As a project, we want a respectful, productive, and inclusive
atmosphere throughout the Debian community. We ask people to meet that
standard when collaborating in the Debian community. If some people
choose not to, then we can (and will) moderate or block those people
where necessary. We value free speech, but that does *not* extend to
giving contributors a free pass to harass or abuse others.

I hope you understand that.

Moderation seems eminently reasonable on paper, but in practice, my
experiences with it have been generally bad (stack exchange sites, some
other mailing lists).

Please, folks. The subject (mail vs discourse) is thorny enough,
eliciting strong emotions (myself included).

Mixing it up with group moderation is going to kill any chance
of having a productive discussion.

It is as easy to moderate a mailing list as it is a platform à la
discourse. So this isn't a criterion to decide between both.

So please: let's take one thing at a time, will we?

Thanks & cheers

It is, on the contrary, the *primary* criterion for the proposed change
as given by the primary proponent of the change:

 Why are you doing this?
I have two motivations. First, is moderation. Discourse has built in
tools to allow community moderation on a much better scale than our email
 lists.

This one is surprising to me. Why should community moderation be
easier for discourse?

But I'm just a dumb C programmer :-)

You can close threads, so no further messages can be added (stops
hi-jacking, drift, etc.) Can split message(s) off to start new topic
(because of thread drift). Same as any other web forum, of course. Most
web forums don't have email capability though. Only discourse and
groups.io that I know of have it. Even then, as an email user of both
discourse and groups.io I'm treated as 'second class'.

In every other way (i.e. apart from moderation) discourse (and other web
forums) are inferior to email. The quoting sucks, for a start.

I don't see why mailing list software (technically) can't offer this
too. But I won't further belabour that point.

That's my opinion, too (and I /do/ have some experience with
discourse). But, well, there are other opinions out there, so...

I'm sure it can. Thread splitting is easy enough, with an MUA that
allows you to do it, but at the archive end, IDK. Discourse certainly
makes it easier. Closing threads - not so much.

As do I. Both groups.io & discourse. I dislike both.

Yes, but the sender of a message has to actively do that and all others
have to follow it. Also you can't retroactively split of a part of a
thread into a new one.

With a web-forum the admin/moderator can split the thread, even after
the fact and everybody is forced to follow.

How this would translate to the mail interface (my guess: it doesn't) is
another question.

Although not clear from my comment, I am aware that thread splitting is
easier at discourse (for example). Thank you for making the point.

I have to agree.

To be even more precise (and I know you know this was well, just
spelling it out for the archive):

Changing the state of a thread (change the subject, split the thread,
lock or delete it) is easier in *any* medium where you control the
central database in contrast to a system which has multiple
decentralized ones (if you call mailbox of each individual recipient a
"database").

>> How this would translate to the mail interface (my guess: it doesn't)
>> is

> I have to agree.

I know MS Exchange has a "recall email" function, which can create
confusion among its users, for example when one instance allows it and
another does not.

Usenet also has Cancel and Supersede control messages, which have in the
past been (ab)used to various degrees, up to the fact that today most
sites don't honor them, whereas some do, but only when used with the
correct Cancel-Key in the header, a mechanism not all clients are able
to use.

In the end: it is a mess.

Grüße,
S!

Though described as a mailing list manager Sympa has a full Web
interface that might satisfy email-phobic millennials.

Thank Cthulhu I'm not email-phobic :)

I imagine few others who "really want to help out" are either; just that
they have to be guided.

I think that many of those who Neil McGovern is concerned about are.
