The covid-19 situation is giving me lots of free time recently, so I've ordered a Raspberry Pi 4 with delivery expected sometime this week. I'd like to use it for a NAS for the home network, so my family can share files without resorting to sneaker-net. We have a full range of clients -- Mac, Win, Linux (mostly debian, but also CentOS and Ubuntu) and I'd like to be able to serve all of them if possible. Can anybody suggest a good NAS package? Debian based is preferable, but almost any Linux will do. I've been looking at Rockstor but I don't see anything there that will run on a Raspberry Pi. Anybody using something they have had good experience with? Thanks in advance, Rick

Hi Rick You could try openmediavault. It has an iso for the raspberrypi, and comes with a smb, ftp and ssh system preinstalled, so serving all kinds of client os's should be no problem. It also has a webgui, and has a few plugins to add webdav for example. --- Regards Vincent Lammens https://vincentlammens.net Charles Curley schreef op 2020-03-24 05:28: > On Mon, 23 Mar 2020 20:43:43 -0700 > "Rick Thomas" <rick.thomas@pobox.com> wrote: > >> Can anybody suggest a good NAS package? Or (since both of them do speak SMB, whatever it's limitations) is SMB/ftp/ssh considered sufficient for all? Enjoy! Rick

As it is, I am building it and its preempt-rt kernel on the pi, but have to jump thru perms hoops to move those builds to this machine for interested folks to download and use them. I have apache2 running in a perms sandbox. If I could make the build result on the pi available directly from my web server on this machine, it would be helpfull. I'd assume that I could put the pi files in the same sandbox? Thats somewhat confusing because www-data doesn't exist as a user on either machine. But it works on this amd64 machine, but a chown doesn't work on the pi. Humm, pi is not a member of www-data on the pi, but I am on this box. Bears investigation because if I add pi to that group, both are then user 1000. And thats not a warm and fuzzy feeling. Looks like I need lessons on sandboxing. Thanks Vincent. A VPS might, but that is a server in the > cloud, which are quite expensive sometimes. I read it as VPS too. You can get a low-end VPS quite cheaply ($2 to $10 per month, I believe), and moving your hosted content offsite can be a major relief for your local bandwidth. A quick Google search for "cheap vps" right now confirms the $2/month low end price. The one I got several years back is $6 a month.

I've always used a small amount of hosted web space elsewhere, and given somebody else the job of not getting hacked. The downside of that is that one of my former hosts has been taken over by another company, the web hosting was dropped but the server still remains connected, so I have a ridiculously out-of-date set of pages still up, that neither I nor anybody else are able to remove. The copyright notice of 2007 is a clue to anybody finding it, which is at least unlikely as it is accessible on a URL that I haven't published anywhere for twenty years. But it's still there, I've just looked... -- Joe

Or (since both of them do speak SMB, whatever it's limitations) is SMB/ftp/ssh considered sufficient for all? Running multiple file sharing services against the same backing store sounds like a recipe for disaster. Different operating systems and different network file sharing protocols make different assumptions about file system features and how to implement translations to foreign file systems. Even fundamental stuff, such as user and/or group identification, binary vs. text mode, end-of-line character sequence, permissions vs. attributes, file locking, etc., often require imperfect compromises on the client and/or server. Things get even more complex as you add more features -- access control lists (ACL), file and dataset properties, snapshots, clones, file flags, securelevels, security policies, etc.. I use Samba alone for my SOHO file server. If/when I want another protocol, it will have its own backing store. David

It looks very interesting. Nextcloud sounds like it does exactly the kind of thing I was hoping for. Can you explain a little bit about how "plain vanilla Samba" fits into the nextcloud picture?

I had Samba running just fine long before I tried nextcloud. When I realized that nextcloud stores files as binary blobs in an SQL database, I decided that I prefer Samba (or AFS or NFS....), where a file is backed by a file. I do use the nextcloud file server for smaller files, and leave the big ones on Samba. -- Does anybody read signatures any more? https://charlescurley.com https://charlescurley.com/blog/
