Hi,

I am facing the same situation as reported in the issue here:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=953223

So having no more /etc/fuse.conf on my system, what is the best to get it
back?
Why doing 'apt --reinstall install fuse3' do not restore this file?
Neither notify anything about it?
Finally I have forced a purge (because of the dependencies) and so install
it from fresh.

Thanks,
Patrice

I must admit I don't quite understand the bug report itself: isn't
"purge" supposed to remove the conffiles?

I was under the (perhaps wrong?) impression that "remove" leaves the
conffiles alone and "purge" removes them.

We share that assumption Tomas. Are we wrong?

Yes exactly you can consider different «problems» there:

1. How to correctly package different source packages that have to share
conffiles? So even purging one of them should leave the conffiles for the other
installed ones.

Laurent is suggesting to not do any explicit 'rm' of any conffiles in .postrm
dpkg is doing the job.

(if I understand well)

And both fuse and fuse3 proceed the same:
https://sources.debian.org/src/fuse3/3.9.0-1/debian/fuse3.postrm/
https://sources.debian.org/src/fuse/2.9.9-2/debian/fuse.postrm/

2. How do get back such conffiles once it have been remove like this?

Doing a reinstall is not enough and neither alert anything.

Ah... got it. It's *two* packages sharing a conffile. Now I understand,
thanks.

Your understanding is correct, at least according to the manual:

       remove
remove is identical to install except that packages are
removed instead of installed. Note that removing a package
leaves its configuration files on the system.

       purge
purge is identical to remove except that packages are removed
and purged (any configuration files are deleted too).

If a package that is in state Config Files has to be purged, the cycle
is really simple: the conffiles are deleted and *then* (emphasis mine)
 postrm purge is called.

https://wiki.debian.org/MaintainerScripts

The policy violation and bug #953223 consists of the postrm script
purging the conffiles, whereas that task falls within dpkg's domain. How
exactly Monsieur Bigonville arrived at this discovery I can't quite
grasp (if I'm not misunderstanding the whole thing and making a fool out
of myself again).

Maybe the bug reporter had both fuse and fuse3 installed simultaneously,
at which point he purged one or the other. Both packages provide an
/etc/fuse.conf file.

Ah, two packages sharing the same config file is the bit that escaped
me. Thanks for pointing that out.

Deleting a configuration file is considered to be a choice of the
administrator and will be preserved.

Purge and reinstall should do it.

Another option is 'dpkg -i --force-confask <package>', which will ask
whether you want to "install the package maintainer's version" of the
file, which will install the conffile from the package.

Kind regards,
Andrei

Not always! ;-) Moreover if this remove have been done by a maintainer script
without paying too much attention about any «brother» packages. Note that this
was consider as a bug also by the maintainer and it was closed since then.

Also I try to use tool like 'adequate' do detect such a case on my system but it
is not in its scope. Is there a easy way/tool for that? with dpkg itself?

What I was trying to suggest with my first post to the list is that may be
reinstalling a package (with some removed conffiles) will notifying it in the
output whatever the result: keeping it removed, providing a conffile.dpkg-new,
...

Thanks,
Patrice

Correction: conffile. Not all configuration files are conffiles ;)

Kind regards,
