Good. Now we do not have to guess.

Four filters are started - texttopdf, pdftopdf, gstoraster and hpcups.
All complete successfully. The filtering system has done what it is
designed to do. The implication is that the transport system to the
printer or the printer itself is at fault. But the printer is known to
print!

Would you confirm (or otherwise) that the computer you are printing from
is USB-connected to the printer?

I should have imported the other subthread to here. :-)

The printer is connected via an ethernet cable to a switch, which is in
turn connected to the router/modem. The computer is connected to the
router/modem via ethernet.

Again, thank you for your persistence and patience.

You will have, or can obtain, an out.dat file. This file is a printer-ready
file. What cupsfilter has produced is no different from what is produced
when you have printed (or failed to print) previously. We will send it
directly to the printer.

nc YOUR_PRINTER'S_IP_ADDRESS 631 < out.dat

nc (netcat) should be on your system.

Hello Brian,

Results in the following being output to the command line;

HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request
Connection: close
Server: HP HTTP Server; HP Officejet 6700 - CN583A; Serial Number:
CN33RBQHFG05RQ; Margarita_premium_mp2 Built:Tue Jul 03, 2018 11:55:54PM
{MPM3CN1827DR, ASIC id 0x003a0008}

That snippet is output to the command line multiple (nine, in fact)
times, and does not return to the command prompt. I had to <Ctrl>-C to
exit. Nothing is printed by the printer. In fact, the printer's
display doesn't illuminate as it did when trying to print from within
(say) LibreOffice.

I confirmed the IP address of the printer was correct by copying/pasting
into a browser and loading the printer's internal web page.

HPLIP 3.20.2 is still installed, BTW.

My fault entirely. The port number is 9100, not 631. I always make a
slip up along the way with things like this :). I am assuming the device
has an open port 9100; most HP printers do. You can check with

  nmap YOUR_PRINTER'S_IP_ADDRESS

Port 631 is for IPP and a protocol exchange is expected. netcat doesn't
use any protocols, apart from tcp/ip. It simply shovels the data over
the wire and hopes for the best. No wonder Margarita was confused.

Telling us that helped a lot.

It wasn't involved here but its best to keep it about for now, if it
suits you.

We're all human. Mistakes happen. Not a problem.

Okay, substituting 9100 as the port number, the contents of
/etc/nsswitch.conf were printed.

Given the above, probably not necessary, but output lists a number of
open ports and the services used, including port 9100.

It's inconvenient, but as this situation doesn't affect anybody else
here (I've pinned hplip on the only other computer that would be
affected) I can work around it.

This eliminates the ethernet cable and the printer part of the issue.
The remaining component of the transport system is the backend filter.
Test it with

  lp -d XXX -o raw out.dat

This sends out.dat to the printer without going through the filtering
system. XXX is the queue name. You probably know what it is or it can
be obtained from below.

Also provide the outputs of

 lpstat -t

and

 lpinfo -v

Output on the command line is;

request id is Officejet_6700-14179 (1 file(s))

However, although the printer receives something (the control panel
illuminates) nothing is printed.

Looking at the jobs list in Cups shows the job to be "processing
since" and the time/date. As before, the job eventually times out with
a communication error.

That looks like a failure in the backend, doesn't it? The outputs of the
two commands asked for, please.

I see nothing wrong with this URI, so, until we know better, I'll take
it that the bug is in the hp backend.

I can think of no other troubleshooting to do, although I suppose you
could backup /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp and replace it with the 3.19.12
one.

> network socket://192.168.1.53:9100

This URI should give printing. Do

  sudo lpadmin -p Officejet_6700 -v socket://192.168.1.53:9100

Revert with

  sudo lpadmin -p Officejet_6700 -v hp:/net/Officejet_6700?ip=192.168.1.53

(You will lose automatic scanner discovery with this URI).

Just tried that, and still nothing printed. Reverted the change.

Is that a permanent loss, or until I log out and back in or reboot?
Something else, perhaps?

I was going to add pointers for this thread to the bug report I created,
but I see you're ahead of me. :-)

Thank you again for your patience and tuition. I owe you a beer or

Further confirmation that the hp backend plays some part in the lack of
printing.

Permanent. A URI will have to be supplied to simple-scan and xsane. For
your machine:

  xsane hpaio:/net/Officejet_6700?ip=192.168.1.53

An alias for this could be used.

At least that's something.

Ouch. At least there's a workaround. Thanks.

As I said in my reply to songbird, I'll probably just downgrade to
3.19.12 and keep an eye out for updates. Adding info to the bug report
as it develops, and I've got something useful to offer, of course.

Strange that, so far, I appear to be the only person that's happened
across this problem.

i know this sort of thing isn't really often the kind

just fixes whatever was broken.

No, I haven't. Frankly, it makes me feel weak to even think about doing
so. I don't like fiddling at that sort of level of the OS. I'm happy
playing in user space. Beyond that, I tend to rely on guidance from
others. As you go on to say, purging/reinstalling (paraphrasing, I
know) is not really a 'Linuxy' thing to do.

The reason for Brian patiently walking me through some diagnostics is
because he's involved with the dev team. At least I think he is. Either
way, he clearly knows his stuff, and managed to demotrate that;

a) the printer is fine
b) cabling is good
c) networking is good

Since v3.19.12 still works, I'll probably reinstall that, and have done
with it for the time being.

Obviously, when updates appear, I'll try them out.

I remember that CUPS disables queues after encountering an error.
Did you reenable the queue?

When you routinely ignore recommendations from those developing your
system, then I find it all too likely that your system is too broken in
too many surprising ways.

Feel free to insist that ignoring recommendations works fine for you
(others before you have insisted on that), just please mention
explicitly that practice of yours when seeking help, so that those
believing in the sanity of following recommendations can avoid getting
frustrated figuring out which not-broken-by-another-definition breakage
might have caused your issue.

> Should I still go ahead and file a report?

I don't know.

Good luck with your system.

There might be an upstream issue with hplip 3.20.
I'm on Arch and since the upgrade of hplip to 3.20.2 I was unable to
print. My MFP 377dw spit out multiple pages - some blank, some showing a
line or two of gibberish - when trying to print something.
Downgrading to 3.19.12 fixed that for me.
