#213112 — ttf-mscore fonts and contrib repos

FromChristopher Marlow <debian@cwm030.com>
Date2019-08-22 19:00 +0200
Subjectttf-mscore fonts and contrib repos
Message-ID<yxYBj-8wt-3@gated-at.bofh.it>
Hi,

When I try to add the contrib repos to buster:

===========================================================================

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian buster main contrib non-free

#

# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 10.0.0 _Buster_ - Official amd64 NETINST
20190706-10:23]/ buster main

#deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 10.0.0 _Buster_ - Official amd64 NETINST
20190706-10:23]/ buster main

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster main
deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster main

deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security buster/updates main
deb-src http://security.debian.org/debian-security buster/updates main

# buster-updates, previously known as 'volatile'
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster-updates main
deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster-updates main

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian buster main contrib non-free
deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian buster main contrib non-free

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian-security/ buster/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian-security/ buster/updates main contrib non-free

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian buster-updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian buster-updates main contrib non-free

# This system was installed using small removable media
# (e.g. netinst, live or single CD). The matching "deb cdrom"
# entries were disabled at the end of the installation process.
# For information about how to configure apt package sources,
# see the sources.list(5) manual.

============================================================================

I get an error saying that some repos have been configured many times.

What am I doing wrong? I would like to get the mscore ttf fonts installed.

Thanks in advance!

Chris

Because apparently you have...

Keep just one of the entries, preferably one including 'contrib' ;)

Kind regards,

So basically

debhttp://deb.debian.org/debian-security/ buster/updates main contrib non-free
deb-srchttp://deb.debian.org/debian-security/ buster/updates main contrib non-free

Or

debhttp://deb.debian.org/debian buster-updates main contrib non-free
deb-srchttp://deb.debian.org/debian buster-updates main contrib non-free ?

Indeed. However, it is a warning which is issued, not an error.
Posting what was seen on the screen would have revealed this. A
trivial omission? Not really. User interpretation of what is
seen on the screen is often defective.

Better yet, comment or remove the deb-src lines, unless you usually
download the sources for packages (using the debian tools for that).
Most people don't, and the deb-src only wastes bandwidth, processing
time, and disk space.

Look at what Mindaugas Celiesius wrote. Forget about the lines
beginning with "deb-src". Do not put them in your sources.list.
They are useless for what you want to do.

That leaves three lines beginning with "deb". Those are the ones
you need.

BTW, in spite of the warnings, updating still took place with your
original sources.list.

I had to specifically open a browser to see this URL. It basically
consists of three lines that could easily have been posted here. A
vanity URL, I expect.

That's *your* problem. .ru is a respectable top level domain. Stop doing
whatever you do and stop blaming a contributer to this list for your
own ineptitude in handling mail. Whatever you think you are achieving is
nothing but nonsense.

I'd add ' contrib non-free' to the end of the debian-security line as
well - otherwise you won't get security updates for the contrib and
non-free packages you might have installed.

Richard

Can you copy and paste that line for me, and I will add it to my config file? Thanks!

From your other responses, I think you've got it. But please, make sure
you understand what you're trying to achieve, and what the lines mean,
rather than relying on others to provide every last detail.

Cheers,
Richard

I think I understand. I am new to debian from the Ubuntu world...
So to sum it up... I was wanting the non contrib repos so I could download the TTF-MSCORE-Installer fonts aka Windows fonts. And then the other posters
were telling me to remove the src source line because I wouldn't need them unless I was downloading packages to install them.

I think thats all to sum it up.. If I missed anything let me know.

Ummm, just to clarify one thing here. The lines in /etc/apt/sources.list
that begin with deb (only deb, not deb-src) are the lines that tell apt
and friends where to look for packages to be installed (those are
usually binary packages) but lines that begin with deb-src tell apt and
friends where to look for the source of the binary packages. So you
don't need the deb-src lines unless you want to do something to the
source of the packages (try to compile them yourself, do some change to
the source and then compile to test out an idea etc etc).

It just seemd to me from your post that you were still confusing those
two (excuse me if that is wrong) :-)

So to sum it up:
deb lines give apt and friends ability to install software
deb-src lines give apt and friends ability to fetch source of
   packages

Cheers, Oli

For simplicity, you can copy these lines:

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian buster main contrib non-free

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian-security/ buster/updates main contrib non-free

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian buster-updates main contrib non-free

Also, look at Debian wiki. Everything is described quite clearly there. Here link:
