Also, seems unlikely that you'd have accidentally disabled javascript globally, just googled for how you do that... In the Firefox address/search bar, enter the address about:config and then in the search bar on that config page search for javascript.enabled. On mine is says that config is 'default boolean true' which I assume means that the value is the default (i.e. not been changed) and it's a boolean (true/false) value set to true. -- Tixy

One hash't to put up with all the abominations the web tries to throw at us these days :-) But what you can do is: - enter the offending page's URL in the URL box and press ENTER. The offending whiteness shows (who knows, perhaps it's a good choice, after all :) - go to the Firefox menu (this quaint thingy usually at the top right with three parallel lines, you know). - Clicking on that thingy, a menu should display. One of the entries is named "Web Developer" (for me it's third-last). Click on that. - A sub-menu opens. Choose there "Network" (about sixth to seventh down) Now the window splits (perhaps, instead, a second window opens, depending on some mysterious browser settings). This new (sub-) window will show the network traffic happening on a request. Perhaps you should activate the tab "All" or something. Play a bit around... Now reload your page. To force reload regardless of cache state (you /want/ to do that) hit SHIFT-CTRL-R. Then you'll see a list of all the requests made and their results in your network monitor (sub-)window. Failing requests (possibly at the root of your problem?) should be marked red. Enjoy the debugging ride :-) Cheers -- t

FWIW, I get similar-sounding behaviors with seemingly-arbitrary sites on my own primary machine; I've always chalked it up to a fweird bug in Firefox, both because it always works through other channels (other browsers on the same machine, wget on the same machine, Firefox on another machine) and because upgrading Firefox to a new version usually fixes it. When it happens, Firefox just shows the page as plain blank; even "View Source" shows an empty document. It hadn't occurred to me to check the "Web Developer" console as suggested a few posts back, and I'm not entirely positive it would work as described / expected in my somewhat outdated Firefox, but that's a good suggestion and I'll want to pursue it for possible further clues. Currently, the only place I'm seeing this is http://www.electoral-vote.com/, and I've been seeing it there for at least a large fraction of a year and possibly considerably more. (Because I haven't managed to wrangle extensions, etc., to the point where I'm willing to upgrade Firefox.) So, depending on what the underlying behavior of what I'm seeing is and (to some possible extent) on what browser version Gene is using, it's entirely possible that this is a genuine weirdity and not just something unique to Gene's (I think) somewhat idiosyncratic environment. One thing I haven't tried is a clean Firefox profile, but I suspect that that would fix it just as well as a Firefox upgrade would. If so, then very likely something in one of Firefox's semi-opaque binary configuration files (most if not all of which I think are SQLite databases, nowadays) has gotten corrupted, and figuring out what could lead to a way to fix it without that clean wipe. -- The Wanderer The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Well, yes, I'd expect that. Whatever is causing this to break (as I said, I suspect something in the Firefox profile) is clearly per-machine; this even works fine for me in Firefox on another computer on the same network. Similarly, I haven't bothered checking the URL you gave, because I'd expect it to work just fine for me even if it fails for you - just as I'd expect this URL to work for you, even though it fails for me. -- The Wanderer The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. http://www.electoral-vote.com/ comes up fine here on Firefox 60.8.0. It wants to load script from itself, Twitter, and Addthis (I don't let it, of course). It doesn't seem to want to set any cookies, but you might try clearing your cookies and cache anyway. Sometimes sites won't load because you have an old and/or corrupted cookie that they set. This is a bug in their code, of course, but telling them so is useless. -- John Hasler jhasler@newsguy.com Elmwood, WI USA

Searching Edit -> Preferences -> Privacy -> Show Cookies... for 'electoral' finds no results, so I don't think there's anything to clear. I'm certainly not going to clear my cookies en masse just for this, there's too much else that I probably want to keep that's stored in them. I might try clearing my cache at some point, but I think it's all expired multiple times since this problem first manifested, anyway. > Sometimes sites won't load because you have an old and/or corrupted > cookie that they set. True enough, but I think a false trail in this case. -- The Wanderer The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. I installed noscript many years ago and tried it out but I guess back then it felt a little annoying to have to explicitly allow all the various pages so I allowed javascript by default. (i.e. noscript stayed installed but wasn't doing anything.) A few weeks ago I finally updated to buster and I noticed that it had gone back to blocking javascript by default. Since then I've been trying the block-by-default setup and I like it so I've kept it like that. So with noscript active, when I try the site you mention, all I get is also a blank page. On the same line with my address bar, to the right, there is an icon for noscript, showing that it is blocking some sites. By clicking on that icon, I can try to temporarily or permanently allow code from any of those sites. Then I reload the page. For your blank site, I had to allow abc4news.com and sinclairstoryline.com. Those two were enough for the story to appear (though I allow some sites by default, so I am not sure if there is something else you need to allow). Of course, when selectively allowing only an incomplete subset of the javascript, one can never be sure if there is more "meaningful/useful content" on the page that you don't see but are not aware of missing. But in this case the story looks like it's there and even has a picture, so I assume the rest of the javascript will not add content to this news item.
