Now I understand. In my mind I was overcomplicating things.

Cheers.

The only files where one gets a warning are those marked as 'conffiles',
and they typically reside in /etc (but not all configuration files in
/etc are 'conffiles').

model.dat being a file in /usr/share it will most likely be overwritten
without any warning (but I'm too lazy to check).

Kind regards,
Andrei

Likewise. :-)

Cheers for the clarification (which I trimmed for brevity).

   that's not a big problem:
a simple "grep" can show whether the file has been updated,
a simple "cat" can re-introduce my envy_photo entry
and a simple script can do that automatically.

By the time you have twiddled with all of that you could have installed
from stretch backports.

It certainly will be overwritten if there is a new version of
libsane-hpaio or, for that matter, if that package is reinstalled.
Making a backup of an existing file after changing it isn't really
necessary. A new version of models.dat would likely include data
for newly supported devices, as happens with libsane-hpaio from
stretch backports.

Install the non-free plugin on your desktop (or laptop). 'hp-plugin' should do it.

(Yes, I know upstream HPLIP says you do not need one).

it is already installed. When I run it, it says:

error: Unable to open /data/home/frenkiel/.hplip/hp-plugin.lock lock file.

I tried to create this file (touch ...), but I get the same error

on both laptops, the driver plugin was successfully installed with the same command.

Previously, scanning didn't work on the laserjet from your laptop. Does
it work now?
