Hello, I installed Debian, but it boots to a blinking _ , otherwise dark screen. Best I can figure, I need the microcode firmware update for the system, since I saw a mention of that on the text (it was the first line, so hard to miss). What steps do I need to do to get my video to work? I will try safe mode next, I guess, see if that does anything. Thanks for any hints or tips.

It may or may not produce much difference compared to safe mode. Nomodeset is typically only for making repair operations possible. While using it, if X works at all, it will be slow and use a suboptimal video mode. 'sudo apt install firmware-amdgpu' may be all you need to do during a rescue boot in order to get competent video from your Radeon on next restart. -- Evolution as taught in public schools is religion, not science. (and the symptom looks like nvidia driver are not loaded on an nvidia card) Can you boot in console mode and show the output of lspci ? All the best
