#210435 — gtk-config problem

FromPierre Frenkiel <pierre.frenkiel@gmail.com>
Date2019-06-27 17:10 +0200
Subjectgtk-config problem
Message-ID<ydEca-3oZ-9@gated-at.bofh.it>
hi,
trying to compile xdialog, I get the following error when running ./configure:

*** The gtk-config script installed by GTK could not be found
*** If GTK was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in
*** your path, or set the GTK_CONFIG environment variable to the
   *** full path to gtk-config.
configure: error: Cannot find GTK: Is gtk-config in path?

with ./configure --disable-gtktest, I get same error.

adding --without-gtk2 gives (like --with-gtk2)
    Compiling for GTK2
    checking for pkg-config... no
    checking for GTK+ - version >= 2.2.0... no
*** A new enough version of pkg-config was not found.
    *** See http://pkgconfig.sourceforge.net
    configure: error: Cannot find GTK2.

how to inform the program of the difference between "with" and "without" ?

best regards,

gtk-config is from libgtk1.x which is quite old, and no longer found in
any current Debian releases (not even squeeze or wheezy). Near as I can
tell from my limited searching, the last Debian release to have this
package was Debian 5.x (lenny).

Building this program might be challenging. Perhaps you can find a
replacement. Based on its name, I would guess it's a sibling to
things like zenity.

If everything else fails - try reading the documentation - [1]:

What are the system requirements IOT execute Xdialog ?
They are very minimal (no exotic/silly library needed): X11 and GTK+
(v1.2.0 or upper, v1.2.8 and upper preferred) is all what Xdialog needs
to run.

So unless you provide GTK+1 headers to the thing - it won't compile.

I don't know the answer to that, but you will definitely have to
configure xdialog "--with-gtk2" because the only alternative (gtk1) is
long dead. Be sure to install libgtk2.0-dev for that.

FWIW, xdialog can be found on snapshot.debian.org[1], and the latest
version (2.3.1.dfsg.1-1) from 2007 still builds fine. I have no idea if
it still works, though.

Cheers,
       Sven

several users replied about gtk-config, but actually, my problem
was "compiling xdialog" (I should have put this as subject)

The solution proposed by Sven (snapshot.debian.org) works perfectly.
thanks, Sven
