On coyote, it'll look something like line 3:

$ ifconfig -a
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:31:20:c2:5f:5e

          inet addr:192.168.1.2 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
          inet6 addr: fe81::231:19ff:fea1:4f4e/64 Scope:Link
          ...

But if in doubt, set it to something you like, then add it to /etc/hosts on
the others, I figure. (Haven't yet fussed with IPV6, myself.)

Erik

P.S. Yes, there's doubtless an "ip" way to show addresses too. BMG.

I refer you (second time today, hint, hint) to this page from Wikipedia:

The third time, you owe me a beer ;-P

It's quite improbable I manage the jump over the pond, but never say
never.

More importantly, thanks for your nice invitation, which I do appreciate
highly :-)

A long enough run at it? :) I never gave it any great thought other than
you don't write like somebody from "east of the river". (where
river=Mississippi)

Far, far east. Usually Berlin, Germany, at the moment Switzerland.

You're on, but you'll have to come and get it, and it will be miller64
because I'm diabetic. And most think it needs at least one trip less
thru the horse. :) We'll drink one while I'm showing off my mess in the
garage. I don't have real estate enough to build a bigger one, and a
14x24 has just one trail thru it about 2 to 3 feet wide. The rest is an
assortment of cnc and woodworking stuff.

That gives a vague nebulous overview, but Gene needs a bit more detail.
A quick google of "linux static ipv6 address howto" gave some promising
looking hits. I liked the look of the third hit:

https://kb.wisc.edu/ns/page.php?id=14099

While the example is aimed at a specific site, it shows the files to be
edited, and IIUC, FE80 is for local addressing, like ipv4 non-routable
address ranges, so it should be generally applicable, I figure.

The tutorial in the second hit:

https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/ubuntu-ipv6-networking-configuration/

might be worth a try next, using an FE80 address, I figure.

Use your google foo, Gene! There's so much chaff out there, and life's
too short to be sorting the wheat out with tweezers.

Erik

Amen on that!

What google-foo?
With my luck, and looking for a razer blade, I get links to Gillette WY.

yes/no. ipv6 from what I understand, expands the ip space so everything
on the planet for the forseeable future can have its own address, hence
the IOT where you fridge takes inventory including the age of that block
of cheese in the door, and sends you a shopping list. But what if the
address you're using has 3 duplicates "out there"?

But who or what is the gatekeeper to make sure the address you choose,
supposedly at random, isn't in use someplace next door or half the
planet away? There may be some sort of an enforcement in ipv6, but I've
not heard of it. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist, just that if it
does, I've never read about it.

I'd like to read an informed discusson of how that is supposed to work.
> P.S. Yes, there's doubtless an "ip" way to show addresses too. BMG.

yes, ip a and ip r for showning route. I have learn that much about ip.

No, the hosts file is also used for v6.

Just thinking out loud (with no knowledge of exactly where you live -- what
about Morgantown? I'd be a little surprised if WVU and the town around it did
not support ipv6 (although maybe no external (to WVU) ISPs support it).

Morgantown is 40+ miles up the superslab from here. We have very poorly
maintained dsl from frontier, or nearly any bandwidth you can afford
from shentel, the cable tv folks. After being without a phone the first
5 months of 2013 because vz wouldn't fix anything, I voted with my
wallet and switched it all to the cable. We've been w/o a phone or net
for maybe 3 weeks after bad storms that took the whole county down and
we listened to our 20kw nat gas in the back yard because all the
batteries were dead. Old ipv4 only Arris modems and I've not toted any
ipv6 stuffs in dd-wrt in my router either. With no configuration
support for ipv6 available here on this list (I have asked, thinking I'd
make my local net ipv6, but that would take a 6 to 4 nat in the router),
I've nuked it out of all my network configs as my local net with several
hundred feet of cat5 and 6 seems stuck at 100 Mb, plenty fast enough for
me. I'll have to reconfigure it all from scratch if and when it arrives
here, but at my age, 84, I'll probably miss roll call first and it will
be somebody else's problem, I'm running on a battery now. The doc says
the battery is good for ten years, but there are other problems that
will stop me before then I suspect.
