| Message-ID | <xwbES-1yU-15@gated-at.bofh.it> |
I've tried the Atril man page and F1 from inside Atril.
I've tried a DuckDuckGo search with unsatisfactory results.
I have two problems using the "find" command.
1. When the keyword is found, it is highlighted(sic) in a page green
foreground color. Is there any way to chose a more visible indicator?
2. The find searches from the _beginning_ of the document.
Is there any way to force it to begin searches at a specific page?
Is there any document that would have answered these questions.
Is there a Debian package to read a PDF using a visible means of
highlighting the target text and capable of starting the search on any
page of the document?
TIA

It has the same pale green highlight. Instead of starting search on a specific page, it brings up a clickable list of all pages on which a match occurs. That satisfies the "end goal" and may have advantages. Thank you.

I don't know how to approach my problem. My desktop is MATE. I believe the display manager is lightdm. I used Synaptic to look for "adapta-gtk-theme" without success [my sources.list contains "deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ stretch main contrib"] Suggestions?

This is what I did, long before this package has arrived to official Debian repos, because I dislike default colors and it's easy to change them. You can find a sneak-peek of features and default colors on github. HOWEVER, if I had it installed, it would have made it reasonable to experiment with Alexander's suggested workaround [adapta-gtk-theme from backports]. I've been interested in local repositories since Jessie. A brief browse of aptly links suggests it explicitly addresses some problems that discouraged me from proceeding.

As someone has already noted, I believe you're attributing to the pdf software what is ascribable to your desktop environment, theme, or whatever. I'm just chiming in to point out that if you click the "Annotate the document" icon that juxtaposes the search icon in Evince, two additional icons will appear. The one on the right--"Add highlight annotation"---allows you to highlight text in a variety of colors of your own choosing. Just saying. Might prove useful down the road or something. Or not. -- When you have fever you are heavy and light, you are small and swollen, you climb endlessly a ladder which turns like a wheel. Jean Rhys, Voyage in the Dark

Xpdf does that. Black on white. It starts each search from the previous one. It restarts a search at the top of the page you're on when you do things like select text, change the zoom factor, and so on. The jessie version was broken wrt some keystrokes but all is well in stretch. I don't think it handles passwords, nor certain font configurations like Chase credit card statements. Cheers, David.

I found [https://www.xpdfreader.com/] which I assume is correct. It is apparently more powerful than I was thinking of. I'll explore it later. Thanks.

As I don't have a printer on the machine, I continued. Although the man page states "You can also start xpdf without opening any files", there is not a *convenient* way to select a file to open [requires opening a sequence of multiple dialogs]. Highlighting search string works fine. Menus and controls are much too small to be acceptable. As Curt and Alexander agree that my highlight problem with Evince is desktop &/or theme related, I will pursue that. Thanks.

Right click and Open lies under the cursor. Standard dialogue box. I'm not sure where your "multiple dialogs" come from; perhaps your desktop is doing something. I'll admit that I had to think about how to open a new file from within xpdf. I've been using it from mc as my default viewer, and from the commandline, since 1997 and haven't really found many occasions to do that. Cheers, David.

But xpdf expects you to click "Open" button to go down a level followed by choosing "Open" again in the dialogue box. You can skip that by entering the complete path in the "Selection" box. It fundamentally has a command line orientation with GUI as an extra. I used to be command-line oriented (started with CPM-80) but spent to many decades with Windows(tm). > > I'll admit that I had to think about how to open a new file from > within xpdf.
