#205924 — Debian specific tools/apps

SubjectDebian specific tools/apps
Message-ID<xx6Wt-3MD-9@gated-at.bofh.it>
Hello I’m new to Debian and wanted to know what are some good Debian specific tools/apps I should know so I don’t write emails like this.

I know of
1. Dpkg
2. Apt-file
3. Apt
4. Aptitude
5. I know how to use backports for stable

Is there anything else I should know that can help me find answers quick and help me maintain my system

Thanks

Hi, Josef.

1) The "man pages" hold a wealth of information. Get used to them. Use
them.

Start here: at a command prompt, type:
          man man

2) Suggestion: don't try to learn everything at once. Learn what YOU need
to know, as you need it.

3) Practice.

4) You did back up any data that you can't afford to lose, didn't you?
Good! Now do it again.

Hope this helps.

Oh, and The Debian Administrator's Handbook is a great free resource.
Although it was last updated for jessie it is still very relevant,
especially if new to Debian.

I know how to use Linux, why would I man a tool I know nothing about . I need the tool/app first before I man it. I’m asking for Debian specific tools I need to know.

The documentations I pointed you to are specific to Debian and tell you
Debian-specific things that you need to know.

But apparently you know best so I'm sorry for wasting your time.

Shoot, never noticed that (minor "Jessie" detail) before when I
occasionally post about it, too. It's locally installable:

$ apt-cache search debian handbook
debian-handbook - reference book for Debian users and system administrators
debian-kernel-handbook - reference to Debian Linux kernel packages and
development
debian-kernel-handbook-ja - reference to Debian Linux kernel packages
and development (Japanese)

My local copy is dated as last updated 2018.08.30 (which implies it's
not something useful that was created then abandoned, yay).

Once installed, it's found here:

/usr/share/doc/debian-handbook/html/

That presents a list of 20+ language options. A random peek inside
several shows that it *appears* that it's *fairly* safe to universally
say, "After making a language choice, click on index.html to get the
party started. Your chosen language will appear as soon as you get
past that point." :)

Having a read through the release notes at:

    https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/release-notes/

is often worthwile even for those more familiar with Debian.

Cheers,

A very useful resource for Debian-specific
changes/integration/configuration/etc.:

/usr/share/doc/<package-name>/README.Debian

Kind regards,
