Doesn't your mouse do DoubleClick?

Eh? You can bind keystrokes to a large number of commands (there are
defaults configured). Similarly it supports myriad-buttoned mice which
you can configure. The wheel scrolls both in pages and in dialogue boxes.
And there's the aforementioned Right click menu.

I thought the above was fundamentally how 'doze worked.

Cheers,

I am very fond of xpdf and, as you say, it is very configurable. I
still use it but, most of the time, I use mupdf. The latter is nowhere
as configurable. However, for reading a PDF, it is quick and and has
regular upstream updates, which isn't quite the case with xpdf.

The OP isn't really interested in changing from atril. He perceives a
problem with highlighting a search result. He wants a solution; he has
been given it. Eventually, he will report on the result of his efforts.

I've used mupdf, but not for PDFs. Is it configurable at all?

$ man mupdf | grep conf
$

Having no continuous scroll is fatal. So is not showing the entire
first page by default.

I'm aware of that, but after making my suggestion, the OP's responses
were misleading to anyone thinking about using xpdf.

Cheers,
David.

Not really. What you execute is what you get.

Pressing 'o' brings up the file browser here, but navigating away from the
current directory requires modifying the 'Filter', which ain't exactly
convenient in the modern sense.

That's for o, which just gives you the current directory. Try pressing O.

(I thought *I* was the commandline user, not the DE advisor.)

Both o an O give the current directory here. The manual has nothing
for O.

I think it defaults to opening the last directory you were in the last
time you pressed o (or O) or something.

I think you are correct - but only if you keep xpdf open. Close it and
it reverts to the current directory.

Anyway, I installed atril.

The OP had two "problems".

  > 1. When the keyword is found, it is highlighted(sic) in a page
  > green foreground color. Is there any way to chose a more
  > visible indicator?

  > 2. The find searches from the _beginning_ of the document.

       page?

The visibility of the found item is treated by Alexander V. Makartsev.
My atril is on Xfce and altering the desktop environment theme does
indeed alter the highlight colour. The OP will come along in a while
and tell us it does the same for him.

The second point is incorrect; a misobservation? atril behaves as xpdf
does and starts at the displayed page.

Perhaps I was confusing here. What I meant was that o gave a list of
files in its current directory, whereas O gave both that list
(labelled Files) and another pane of directories (labelled Directories).

> > > Both o an O give the current directory here. The manual has nothing
> > > for O.

With repeated use, o sometimes gave one pane, sometimes two.
O always gave two.

o is given twice in the man page, once under Key Bindings,
later under Default Key Bindings where it is joined by O.
The actions specified by o/O aren't distinguished.

As I pointed out, I'm no expert with opening files like this,
so I can't help if there are unknown bugs or (mis)features.

Yes, its current directory is the last one navigated to, and
starts at the directory containing the file originally opened,
or the shell's pwd if there wasn't one.

> Anyway, I installed atril.

Too much cruft for me.

Cheers,
David.
