#204167 — How to disable automatic mounting external USB devices

SubjectHow to disable automatic mounting external USB devices
Message-ID<xdCmd-7OK-7@gated-at.bofh.it>
I am using STRETCH with MATE desktop.
I need to disable automatic mounting of *ANY* external USB connected
mass storage device.

When the device is plugged in it should appear *ONLY* in the "Devices"
menu and allow mounting by clicking on its identifier.

TIA

Do you have autofs installed? If yes - remove!

It's not installed. Man page says it is for "SysV init".
As I did not chose otherwise I assume I have a straight systemd system.
Thanks

Then man page is wrong. autofs can be also used with systemd as pid 1.

But anyway, google (I'm not using MATE) told me, that

gsettings set org.mate.media-handling automount false

could disable media handling for MATE.

best regards
Ulf

Maybe I am reading the wrong manual but I don't know where either of
you get the idea that autofs is SysV only.

It was [https://manpages.debian.org/stretch/autofs/autofs.8.en.html]
And I stopped reading too soon.

Easily done. Having a solution to your issue is good though.
