Message-ID<xQ1Wh-3t1-5@gated-at.bofh.it>
hello
having problem with Debian Stretch
(installed around Mar 15, 2019, by netinstall)
it is freezing quite often
seems random while using different programs
my system:
Ryzen 5, 16gb, ASUS 320 motherboard, mp500 m.2 120gb ssd, debian on
complete disk (1 partition, also a swap partition), used uefi and lvm
have an amd rx560 gpu, installed non-free amdgpu driver
typically installed software (libs) with aptitude
aptitude reports no broken packages
did install GOG game BG2EE with instructions
from https://wiki.dotslashplay.it/en/games/baldurs-gate-2
game plays okay, but freezes also
other programs i run:
gedit, make, g++-6, vim, evolution and iceweasel
not sure what information i can provide to help solve this problem
please let me know
regards

Yes, but maybe tell him what logs to look at.

Enzo, has this machine had any operating system on it before Stretch? With
no problems?

How often does it freeze? Every hour? Every couple of days? Do you hear
anything prior to the freeze, like the fans kicking into high gear?

Which window manager / desktop environment? Can you switch to a different
DE for a couple of days and get different results?

I'm not sure which logs to look into, but my starting place would be
/var/log.

Knowing what type of program or programs is open each time wouldn't
hurt. Knowing specifically which ones... ok, yeah, I know... the list
could become seemingly endless. My thought process is that maybe
certain ones or combinations of certain genres/families are calling
something up that causes this.

Knowing any personal tweaks done at installation wouldn't hurt, either..

Or knowing things like what I just did LITERALLY ten minutes ago... 2
different versions of the same browser. One's installed via
apt/apt-get... the other manually installed by extracting to /tmp then
certain files were renamed and/or their textual content altered in an
ATTEMPT to prevent conflict before copying over to /usr/*.

Total smooth move that's destined to go quite swimmingly. Am
contemplating opening both at the same time to get today's party
started off with just the right bang-fizzle.. *cues downward spiraling
slide whistle stinger*

tl;dr... Dear Browsers, the ability to get back control of task
scheduling the autoupdate feature.. I just had a positive ending
experience that showed me networking transfer rates might not be the
only thing that is negatively affected by uncontrollable autoupdates.

The long version.. Just had a breakthrough in my own similar deal of
things freezing up A LOT and very frequently lately. Tripped over
autoupdate potentially running in my browser despite conscious efforts
to avoid that k/t dialup. There was no toggle switch to be found
during multiple searches lately.

A determined search today found SuperUser [0] with a slightly older
related thread. It seems a no-brainer to stretch that out to apply to
any package that has an autoupdate feature. I can't name any right
now, but, on rare occasion, I've seen that feature floating around
outside of the browser package family.

The RUMOR is that the autoupdate executable will have been
*relatively* safely disarmed if moving it or renaming it results in a
message similar to.... the one I'm... so not seeing just this second
*cough*:

"An error occurred while checking for updates"

That error message appears in places like "opera://about".

Seconds after that adjustment, my system is smoking right through
things.... flipping through tabs without hesitation and the cursor is
responding IMMEDIATELY to the touchpad.

This is right off the bat when it was previously already bogged down
even this early into a new browsing session. Prior to this change,
I've been having ALL KINDS of slow down issues to that point of having
to hit the hardware button to shut down WAY TOO OFTEN.

** Afterthought: This still might not help with the bogged down cursor
and other things that occur when some of us simply walk away from our
computers for a few minutes.

This find sounds like it may also be applicable to that recent thread
where I caught a blip about desktop PCs, massive amount of images, and
development gearing evermore toward mobile computing. That's a "boy,
howdy, is it ever!" Mobile phone and tablet-type computing puts money
in the hands of those who own the associated wireless services that
frequently are not free. *hm*

Last second observation: I just ran "free -m". HUGE chunk of my
limited memory is already swamped, yet here it is still smokin' right
on along.

Until this second, I leaned heavy toward memory usage as the front
leader for the freezing. I currently have 1GB memory and 1.66Ghz
processing oomph. I took those freezes all in stride, simply dealt
with it all this time because of those low numbers. Crocheting fills
the time in between webpage turns. :)

I figured autoupdate trashes networking speeds, yeah, but never
thought about it having a notable negative effect against the rest of
the operations, e.g. SLOW cursor response times. The change today was
immediate and is *notable* in my usage case.

SECURITY RELATED DISCLAIMER: Disorienting autoupdates in any way means
that one has to consciously schedule those updates to occur during
one's computing downtime.

There's also the possibility that disorienting updates could lead to
smoke inducing, unpredictable behaviors that could break a whole lot
more than just a cursor's slow response time or the even slower
CTRL+Tab/CTRL+SHIFT+Tab webpage navigation travels.

Cindy :)

[0] Yeah, I know, that other operating system mostly. It still worked
in my usage case.
https://superuser.com/questions/828009/how-to-disable-automatic-updates-in-opera

PS Also just found something called "AskVG". Never heard of it before,
but information from their "How to Disable or Block Auto-Update" page
"felt" good.

Task schedulers... that's beyond my comprehension right now. Users
having control via system-wide task scheduling always sounds a whole
lot more *stable* and *appropriate* versus having to wing it via
functions such as "rename", "relocate", and "delete" from within a
package's Developer-implemented file hierarchy.

i can think of things to check - no time at the moment to dig
into it further...

  temperature - use lm-sensors package

hardware issue - memtester or memtest86 or memtest86+ (not familiar with thesebut that is what my search comes up with)

graphics driver - check issues/bug tracker if they have one

GOOD ONE! I'm going through that right now. My CPUs get throttled when
they hit 212 degrees... Cue the Robot running around flailing his arms
yelling, "Danger, Will Robinson!"....

In reality, my little laptop issues the most adorable warning that
sounds like a 6-inch Elf sneezing. The sound is nearly inaudible,
particularly when the... hardware sound feature is currently not
working.

When the hardware does work, Elf's sneeze is so quiet that it would be
easy to miss in a noisy office or household... or e.g. if you walked
away from your computer for just a few seconds.

"sensors -f" and a new little desktop fan are my BFFs right now....

Hello Enzo and all,

I have had this issue in the past as well, with similar hardware (e.g.
Ryzen 5).

In my case, I had two causes.

1. I was too greedy, and tried to use RAM too fast, and RAM that was
not specified to work for the board (but it was so much cheaper). It
appeared to work, outside of the intermittent crashes. I scrambled a
bit, before realizing it affected all systems (had a windows
installation as well, that was also BSOD on me).

The solution, adjust the timing of the RAM. This was tricky for me,
since I am not expert in RAM modifications, but basically had to ensure
to use proper voltage, speed (quite slow, like 2400 MHz, but doesn't
really matter for my applications).

2. Had other random stoppages because of my cpu/heatsink not sitting
properly. I remove it, cleaned the thermal paste, re-applied it, and
reseated the headsink/fan on my cpu. I am not a fan of the design of
the stock heatsink/fan that comes with the Ryzen, where you screw in
the four bolts with the springs.

After all that, system was stable, and runs without issue, going to
sleep and waking, no problems.

These types of problems are almost 100% always hardware related, e.g.
not software/debian related, so focus on a hardware solution.

Good Luck!

hello Esteban
thanks for responding
the motherboard cannot be overclocked and ram is approved for use with
the motherboard (speed wise);
as for the heat sink, (temperature) computer freezes right after
startup first thing in the morning (sometimes) but it also freezes
after being on all day; i never checked the temperature since the fans
are not running too fast (they are quiet and the power supply)
i looked in the /var/log/ but most the files are while large
not sure what to look at, also grub outputs some messages, but cannot
read
i'll continue reading for things to check

What kernel are you running?

The 4.18 out of Stretch-Backports is recommended for the Ryzen
non-built-in-graphics CPU. The 4.9 kernel has problems with it. Or so
my research indicates. For compatibility with the Ryzen graphic CPU,
you'll have to wait for Buster for full support. There are
work-arounds, but all I've found involve pulling files from Buster
which is still in Alpha.

Also, check your RAM is on the compatibility list for the Ryzen
motherboard you have. Just any DDR4 RAM won't always work.
