#203234 — Debian social

FromMarek Mosiewicz <marek.mosiewicz@jotel.com.pl>

SubjectDebian social
Message-ID<x3wi6-4Zf-7@gated-at.bofh.it>
Hi everybody

What about creating Debian users mailing list for social entertainment.
I believe Debian users have great intellectual abilities and such list
where it could be talk about anything could be great thing.

It could be not necessarily hosted on Debian servers. Or maybe debian
people communicate some different way.

When I hear the word "social", a fire of red lights just explodes in front
of my eyes ...

The best is to have friends, family and social contacts in a human way -
this means meeting and talking to people. The social media crap is total
BS.

This was the time before, long live the smombies. Unfortunately I witnessed
how this happened and I am disgusted - I guess many people too, but it
seems we are minority. But don't worry it will solve down into dumbness not
known before and it will resolve itself in a natural way as nature does not
tolerate dumbness at all and everything that goes against nature is doomed
to fail. We've seen it and we'll see it before. It just takes time - look
forward to protect your children by educating them. Many of them fall
victim to the smombies.

usenet still exists and the social groups are
still there, but they may not be very active
these days.

there are even low cost or free news services
available (search for eternal-september for one
example).

I *thought* there used to be a Debian-Offtopic (or off-topic)
listserv, but I don't see it listed on the listserv homepage [0]...
which is where I THOUGHT I saw it listed.

Beyond that, I *thought* I remembered a few times seeing long threads
being (politely) advised to move it on over to offtopic, meaning the
listserv I thought I remembered..

Tried my inbox and only found a total of 3 references in a very large
inbox. One of those referenced an IRC named debian-offtopic. Maybe
that's an option?

If there is a complete list of Debian chat channels (YAY, there is!
[1]), maybe that's what I'm incorrectly remembering as having been the
listservs. EXCEPT THAT I swear I remember considering signing up for
an email listserv by that name, but it was VERY busy so I momentarily
skipped it. IRC as a communication means has always been iffy k/t
local dialup so it's not been viable over the years. :D

Your memory is good; #427218 and #425439. All trace of the -offtopic
list appears to have disappeared from history.

That never worked. People intent on disrupting -user stayed there and
continued their disruptive work.

My recollection (although I never subscribed to it) was it was not
hosted on the Debian list infrastructure.

#425439 seems to suggest a list fitting the bill (d-user-offtopic) was
hosted on Alioth, which seems likely to be one and the same

http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/d-community-offtopic

It looks like the list died with Alioth (and was not ported to
https://alioth-lists.debian.net/)

I concur.

Yeah, but apparently the off-topic group was consistently drifting
on topic to the point where many were advised to move there technical
prolixities and proclivities over here (and vice versa, of course, as
you've pointed out).

You can't win.

As I've pointed out before, this list is named debian-*user*, not
debian-technical-things-only-or-you-will-burn-in-hell-for-eternity.

Debain users will mostly talk about Debian issues, but not necessarily
exclusively.

Did I say that?

What you quoted up there of mine (where I said there instead of their
up there) was an attempt at jocularity. I know you're the moral arbiter
around these parts, repeating yourself and pointing things out and all,
but give me a break.

No, it wasn't specifically in reply to you, but there are apparently
people using newsreaders which don't display subject lines, and they get
hot under the collar when people wander off.
