Hi, I'm running Buster (testing), and trying to set up the SP Flash Tool. I downloaded the archive (https://spflashtools.com/linux/sp-flash-tool-v5-1828-for-linux) and unzipped it (it doesn't require installation), but when I try to start the program I'm informed: error while loading shared libraries: libpng12.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory OK, but apt says: root@debian-nitpicking:/etc/udev/rules.d# apt-get install libpng12-dev Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Package libpng12-dev is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source E: Package 'libpng12-dev' has no installation candidate root@debian-nitpicking:/etc/udev/rules.d# apt-get install libpng12-0 Reading package lists... This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source E: Package 'libpng12-0' has no installation candidate OK ... I did search for and find others who had this problem, but they all boiled down to "The package is not available for your distro version." So would I have to build from source? Any other ideas? (Yo, Mediatek--stop requiring old libraries unless you build static!) Thanks. -- Carl Fink carl@finknetwork.com Thinking and logic and stuff at Reasonably Literate http://reasonablyliterate.com

There is no package in buster that provides libpng12.so.0 . The
libpng12-dev is also not available in testing. It was there in Jessie
(oldstable).

As for installing the Jessie version as suggested crossthread: I get the exact error mentioned in my original message: dpkg: error processing archive libpng12-0_1.2.50-2+deb8u3_amd64.deb (--install): unable to install new version of '/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpng12.so.0': No such file or directory -- Carl Fink carl@finknetwork.com Thinking and logic and stuff at Reasonably Literate http://reasonablyliterate.com

I missed that. Yeah, there is no easy solution here. You can try adding Jessie entries in your /etc/apt/sources.list and do an apt-get update and then try to install. If that does not work, you should either compile it from source or use the third party package on Jessie only. Old packages on newer Debian versions is not supported. thanks raju -- Kamaraju S Kusumanchi | http://raju.shoutwiki.com/wiki/Blog

Are you sure you're actually on an amd64 installation? You've chosen to test buster for the good of the community, so one should be able to assume that you have a fair amount of experience in tracking down and handling glitches, especially in Debian packaging. Just picking one package at random, which has files in this directory on my stretch installation: wooledg:~$ dpkg -L libxi6 | grep x86_64 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libXi.so.6.1.0 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libXi.so.6 That package most likely exists in buster as well, so next I surf over to <http://packages.debian.org/libxi6> and look for a buster link. This takes me to <https://packages.debian.org/buster/libxi6>. Then I follow the [list of files] link for the amd64 architecture <https://packages.debian.org/buster/amd64/libxi6/filelist>. The resulting list of files in the buster package of libxi6 includes: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libXi.so.6.1.0 So, the /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ directory must still exist in buster. Therefore, your report of > unable to install new version of '/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpng12.so.0': No such file or directory points to either you not actually being on an amd64 architecture installation, or a massive problem on your local machine, or some kind of major change, which is not known to me, in how dpkg operates between jessie and buster. I still think "oops, I'm really on i386 but I grabbed the amd64 package from jessie" is the most likely of these.

As someone mentioned here http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=130905&p=631940#p631940 another way to go would be to edit the dependency so that the soft accepts the available version of the library, if such a thing is possible in this case. Hope I'm not completely *à côté de la plaque* with all this. -- “An oak is a tree. A rose is a flower. A deer is an animal. A sparrow is a bird. Russia is our fatherland. OK, I do not understand this at all. I've got a stretch system here with jessie's libpng12-0 package installed. However, I do not know whether this system was installed as jessie and then upgraded, or installed as stretch, and then the package added later. wooledg:~$ cat /etc/debian_version 9.5 wooledg:~$ dpkg -l libpng\* | cat Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold | Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend |/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad) ||/ Name Version Architecture Description +++-=================-===============-============-=================================== ii libpng12-0:amd64 1.2.50-2+deb8u3 amd64 PNG library - runtime un libpng12-dev <none> <none> (no description available) ii libpng16-16:amd64 1.6.28-1 amd64 PNG library - runtime (version 1.6) wooledg:~$ ls -l /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpng12.so.0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 35 Jan 6 2017 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpng12.so.0 -> /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpng12.so.0 wooledg:~$ dpkg -l | grep deb8 ii libdns-export100 1:9.9.5.dfsg-9+deb8u10 amd64 Exported DNS Shared Library ii libhogweed2:amd64 2.7.1-5+deb8u2 amd64 low level cryptographic library (public-key cryptos) ii libicu52:amd64 52.1-8+deb8u4 amd64 International Components for Unicode ii libirs-export91 1:9.9.5.dfsg-9+deb8u10 amd64 Exported IRS Shared Library ii libisc-export95 1:9.9.5.dfsg-9+deb8u10 amd64 Exported ISC Shared Library rc libisc95 1:9.9.5.dfsg-9+deb8u10 amd64 ISC Shared Library used by BIND rc libisccc90 1:9.9.5.dfsg-9+deb8u10 amd64 Command Channel Library used by BIND ii libisccfg-export90 1:9.9.5.dfsg-9+deb8u10 amd64 Exported ISC CFG Shared Library rc libjasper1:amd64 1.900.1-debian1-2.4+deb8u3 amd64 JasPer JPEG-2000 runtime library rc liblwres90 1:9.9.5.dfsg-9+deb8u10 amd64 Lightweight Resolver Library used by BIND ii libnettle4:amd64 2.7.1-5+deb8u2 amd64 low level cryptographic library (symmetric and one-way cryptos) ii libpng12-0:amd64 1.2.50-2+deb8u3 amd64 PNG library - runtime ii libssl1.0.0:amd64 1.0.1t-1+deb8u6 amd64 Secure Sockets Layer toolkit - shared libraries rc libxapian22 1.2.19-1+deb8u1 amd64 Search engine library rc perl-modules 5.20.2-3+deb8u6 all Core Perl modules That seems like a rather nontrivial number of jessie updates (deb8), mostly removed, so maybe this was originally a jessie system? I don't know. Of course, if all else fails, you can grab the jessie .deb file, unpack it manually in /tmp (or wherever you like), copy the shared library files to where they're supposed to be, create the symlinks that are supposed to be created, and run ldconfig. If you're feeling especially bold, you could even try to install the .deb package *after* that. Maybe having the files and symlinks already in place will somehow help it along.

The process is not complicated and this is the only right way to do it without possibly breaking the system. If you just install .deb file there is a chance that won't work properly on your current version of Debian, or work with problems because it lacking libc\ABI compatibility. It will be bad if SP Flash die with SIGV during erasing\flashing. You can follow this detailed tutorial [1] to build it. libpng12-0 builds fast and without issues on stretch, so I think it will build in the same way on buster.
