#200134 — SyncTeX?

SubjectSyncTeX?
Message-ID<wxYPn-2bz-3@gated-at.bofh.it>
Buster, Supermicro Xeon box.

Several times an hour, something is writing on my screen: "! SyncTeX
Error : No file?".

If I hit RTN, I get a normal CLI prompt.

I don't know what it's doing, or what other things are sucking CPU
cycles. I don't know what started it, and I'd like to get rid of it.

I've rebooted -- still there. It didn't used to be, a couple updates ago.

I've looked for a .deb in /var/cache/apt... -- nothing.

I've looked in Aptitude for something installed -- there's a
libsynctex installed, and I started to delete it. But Aptitude said it
was a dependency of something that seems to have something to do with
GNOME (my GUI is XFCE4, but I'm aware that several things bring in
pieces of GNOME). I didn't delete it for fear of going to dependency
hell.

I've looked for something running in ps -- nothing.

Crazy-making; it litters my screen. Anyone have a suggestion/explanation?

Hmmm, +1 -- I had ignored this, as the terminal I had been staring at
for the last few days is running latex/emacs and some makefile that I
had assumed has some synctex in it (but actually does not).

Buster amd64 on a W520 (core i7).  Would be glad to try suggestions...

synctex is part of the 'texlive-extra-utils' package (at least it is on
Stretch).

None springs to mind at the moment, sorry.

I do have this installed — similar to OP, ps -aux shows nothing...

Many of us do (and libsynctex1 with it) because it contains things
like pdfcrop, pdfjam etc, all very useful.

Find out which file is logging this, and tail it in a window with

$ tail -F /var/log/whatever…

Then see on what occasions each message is generated. "Several times
an hour" sounds like the frequency one might open a file for editing.
Or a PDF viewer.

If you find this is indeed the case, then I would look for something
in a startup file for that editor or viewer.

I don't claim to understand the methods being used in this example,
particularly as they are using dbus, but this looks like the sort
of thing that could potentially start spamming messages that are
misrouted to the console.

https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/29813/setup-synctex-with-emacs

Neat trick. The reference given earlier in the thread mentions that
synctex hadn't then been implemented for luatex (a decade ago) and
I don't know whether it has been in the meantime. I'd only be
interested in it if it has.

Cheers,
David.

Thanks to the answers and suggestions to my plea, I may have figured
out what's happening with SyncTeX scribbling on my monitor.

It was suggested that 'texlive-extra-utils' is where synctex comes
from, but that's not installed here. So more than one package must
bring it in as a dependency or something.

Here, I'm pretty sure, it's Evince.

I have a Python script running that tells me every hour to get up from
the keyboard and get a little exercise. That script runs Evince to
display pdfs of the notices. When I kill the script, the garbage no
longer appears. And other Python scripts don't do that stuff.

The problem now is that those notices are good for me. I've looked for
other pdf viewers, but there's nothing in the repositories anywhere as
nice as Evince for taking up the entire screen and enlarging a pdf.

Anybody know of a civilized, bug-free pdf viewer? (will display full
screen with no or thin borders, allows for manipulating size and
position)

Not running a DE myself, I would think that it's likely caused by
some script that gets installed as part of your DE rather than a
dependency. I'm assuming that that's what DEs do.

I don't know about bug-free but I find xpdf works well. Because I use
it as a viewer, not just for settling in for a reading session, I must
have keystroke control rather than the mouse. I add a few things to
the configuration, like:

# Add some closer-spaced zoom factors
bind 0 any zoomPercent(100)
bind 1 any zoomPercent(120)
bind 2 any zoomPercent(150)
bind 3 any zoomPercent(200)
bind 4 any zoomPercent(400)
bind 5 any zoomPercent(600)
bind 6 any zoomPercent(800)
bind 7 any zoomPercent(1200)
bind 8 any zoomPercent(1600)
bind 9 any zoomPercent(2000)

# Avoid tabbing around the buttons because it doesn't help
# (pressing return doesn't enact the selected button).
# Even when redefined to foo, it carries out its default
# action after doing foo. So redefine as quit, since I
# usually press tab accidentally when trying to quit.
bind tab any quit

The keystroke commands never worked in jessie but they've been fixed
now though, as you can see, I don't like the new TAB binding (which
wasn't in wheezy).

I don't think it's as fast as evince with complex PDFs, perhaps
because its redrawing strategy is not as good.

Cheers,
David.

I tried it earlier, but tossed it because it didn't do stuff I needed
it to do. But after getting two recommendations, I looked again, this
time with its man page. It looks like, with a little futzing, it'll do
a better job than Evince. (My pdfs are *way* not complex -- just 3 or
4 lines at most, in 48 point bold type: "Get up and walk around the
lake!" type stuff.)

But I think I'll see if I can't get Python's tkinter to make a GUI
'script' that'll do what I want. It'll be more trouble than xpdf, but
it'll do exactly what I ask of it.

Thanks.

On the off chance that this might be helpful, have you thought about
using the desktop notification system instead of a PDF? Maybe check out
the libnotify-bin package which allows you to specify notifications
directly.

I would stab in the dark and guess 'gedit-plugins,' which pulls in

 /usr/lib/s390x-linux-gnu/gedit/plugins/synctex.plugin
 /usr/lib/s390x-linux-gnu/gedit/plugins/synctex/__init__.py
 /usr/lib/s390x-linux-gnu/gedit/plugins/synctex/evince_dbus.py
 /usr/lib/s390x-linux-gnu/gedit/plugins/synctex/synctex.py

curty@einstein:~$ apt-cache show gedit-plugins
gedit-plugins contain a set of plugins for gedit, GNOME's text editor.
 .
 The following plugins are included:

<sniperino>

  * SyncTeX: Synchronize between LaTeX and PDF with gedit and evince.

Nor do I. No gedit anywhere. It's Evince -- turned things off
