So your first order of business is to hand your legal dept. a copy of the license commonly called the gpl-v2. google can get you thousands of copies of, all you are out is the ost of the paper to print it. It has some very surprising usage conditions which are almost the exact opposite of any proprietary license. If your legal dept can live with that, make like a frog and jump right in. Oh, and I do not represent debian in any capacity except as a happy user. Someone who is an actual member of the organization will probably clarify it further, but I didn't want you to think you are being ignored. -- Cheers, Gene Heskett -- "There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo. I do not think you > would have hurt his feelings by doing so. :) From the line of his msg, it was obvious he, and apparently no one else at his place, had ever heard of the gpl-v2. The main point of that being that they can't take it and put their own license on it. That battle has been won in most of the courts on this wet rock already by the gpl being found valid. But I would expect they will walk away without another word when they find there is no warranty. People like that have a need for somebody to sue if it doesn't Just Work, for their definition of works. They are totally unwilling to accept any liability and will run like turpentine doused cats to find somebody to blame. And thats one less thing this camp has to worry about when they do back away. Basicly, Brian, IMNSHO, the gpl is saying TANSTAAFL, a concept their MBA degree professors never explained. I'm afraid I have to chuckle everytime I see it being enforced. An MBA degree means they've had common sense beat out of them. And they willingly subjected themselves to it. Take care now Brian. -- Cheers, Gene Heskett -- "There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo. There's no evidence he even knew he was asking the question of a place that develops software; his query would have made just as much sense delivered to a tennis shoe manufacturer. It looked like a mass email hoping to get some leads for... something...

Now, I'm up to mock an MBA as much as anyone, but every MBA who paid any attention knows what the GPL is. Here are the words that they can understand, should it come up: The GPL is a simple and straightforward blanket IP license which requires an unusual form of payment: the consideration on your part is to publish the entire codebase of derivative works, at no additional cost, to anyone who receives such a derivative work from you in any manner, under the same GPL license. In addition, there is a royalty-free patent usage grant provision for derivative works, and a few other minor explanations. But in this particular case, I think it was probably a spammer or scammer looking for targets. -dsr-

Yep, looks like that. I studied the headers, and did a little superficial research: "Pilgrim Quality Solutions, Inc." seems to actually exist [1], although it seems highly improbable that someone writing officially on their behalf writes from an address like <inboxemailer@gmail.com>. The other thing which sticks out is -- DKIM, Spamhaus et al. are all fine -- no wonder since the mail is coming from Google. The result of all those anti-spam contortions à la DKIM and SPF seems to be that the Big Boys get the monopoly on spam -- as if they hadn't enough monopolies already. Sometimes I'm glad I'm *that* old. Apologies to the younger ones for leaving behind such a stinkin' mess. Honestly: we believed we were creating something great. There seems to be an endless supply of folks who never heard of TANSTAAFL, and once hearing about it, are convinced it doesn't apply to them. A western movie actor named Marion Morrison when he was born, in a county seat town about 7 miles from where I grew up, you know him as John Wayne, once said "stupidity should be painfull" comes to mind, but in our so-called PC society today, theres a painkiller for that.
