The problem is probably solved with Curt's and Greg's answers, but still to
answer your question: ~/.bcrc is not a default config file for bc (sorry,
didn't think about having it created on my own when I wrote my previous post)
and is only read if you have "BC_ENV_ARGS=~/.bcrc" in your environment or as an
argument to bc on the command line.

Kind regards,
Stefan

Ah, I see the solution is already there. Sorry for not paying attention

Cheers

Your're welcome. I often find more details just after I hit "send" ;-)

Hm. Same for me...

Note that there's no mention of .bcrc in bc's man page...
Neither in bc's info page.

Running under strace I only see it trying to access ~/.inputrc and
~/.terminfo.

It seems you'll have to provide the init file explicitly on the command
line -- or to set the BC_ENV_ARGS. This works for me:

  echo "scale=0" > .my-bc-init-file # choose a better name :-)
  BC_ENV_ARGS=.my-bc-init-file bc

  bc 1.06.95
  Copyright 1991-1994, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2004, 2006 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
This is free software with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.
  For details type `warranty'.
  scale
  20

Season to taste :-)

Cheers

I believe that "apcalc" is something you should look at. It
has a nice command line history similar to using bash nd you
can review your work by just typing "less .calc_history".
