Worst I had happen as a result of power failure was that disk the
journal couldn't recover everything required, such that sector errors
were reported on every boot. A reformat got around that. Tiresome, but
not fatal.

I have had hardware get fried (a printer and an ethernet card), but that
was due to a lightning strike during a storm, not the power outages.

My worst, was kind of "mild", though scary: I had to rebuild /boot (on
ext2), because the last action was placing a copy of the Linux Kernel on
/boot.

(Scary, because it wouldn't, even *start* to Boot).

It was the fear of such an issue (an inability to boot) that finally
galvanised me into action and buy a UPS.

A decision that I have never regretted.

My /boot debacle was the trigger for my first UPS purchase.

why not use something more decent like ext3 or ext4? we are in 2018 ;-)

Thank you, Brad. In fact, this was back in 2006, on Ubuntu 6.06 (the
Release that was "Spammed on CD's", almost as bad as AOL used to do). Back
then, I used ReiserFS for everything except /boot. And I have been a
"Happy UPS User". ever since that mishap.

1: /boot is functionally readonly except during kernel installation and removal

2: journals consume disk space

I would be spending an enormous amount of time rescuing filesystems if not for
having UPS. I have 7 working ATM, to protect other devices in addition to PCs.
Need to replace UPS batteries commonly occurs more than once a year. Power
outages here are routine, hardly a week passes without at least one. Frequently
several occur in very short succession.

not really an argument - the system did not boot for this reason and space
in MBs is cheap nowdays

Cheap is a relative term. It's only "cheap" if it's cheap enough for a
particular context to enjoy. Even if a HD was only a dollar a TB, it wouldn't be
cheap to someone with 0 dollars.

Cheap space does not obviate the value of conservatism generally. The more space
consumed, the more space, and _time_, consumed with backup and restore
operations, even if nominal.

Well, you can't buy any storage with zero dollars. A journal is a couple
of megabytes, and the cost difference between, say, 64GB and 64GB-32MB
rounds to zero.

You don't generally backup a filesystem journal, and if you're doing a
full image copy, see above.

Conservatism, in this case, is not doing something weird with /boot.
