Worst I had happen as a result of power failure was that disk the
journal couldn't recover everything required, such that sector errors
were reported on every boot. A reformat got around that. Tiresome, but
not fatal.
I have had hardware get fried (a printer and an ethernet card), but that
was due to a lightning strike during a storm, not the power outages.

It was the fear of such an issue (an inability to boot) that finally
galvanised me into action and buy a UPS.
A decision that I have never regretted.

Ken gave no indication of time-frame, other than in the past. Could've
been last week, could've been twenty years ago.

I have 7 working ATM, to protect other devices in addition to PCs. Need to replace UPS batteries commonly occurs more than once a year. Power outages here are routine, hardly a week passes without at least one. Frequently several occur in very short succession. -- "Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. It's only "cheap" if it's cheap enough for a particular context to enjoy. Even if a HD was only a dollar a TB, it wouldn't be cheap to someone with 0 dollars. Cheap space does not obviate the value of conservatism generally. The more space consumed, the more space, and _time_, consumed with backup and restore operations, even if nominal. -- "Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Whatever else you get, get wisdom." A journal is a couple of megabytes, and the cost difference between, say, 64GB and 64GB-32MB rounds to zero. >Cheap space does not obviate the value of conservatism generally. You don't generally backup a filesystem journal, and if you're doing a full image copy, see above. Conservatism, in this case, is not doing something weird with /boot. Mike Stone
